Here is something I had happen to me today. I installed in my Maverick a new battery, starter solenoid, and new positive cable. So I get in the car, turn the key and the engine cranks over, and keeps cranking. The engine would not shut off! First off I knew the engine wouldn't start, why? Because I removed the coil wire from the distributor to prim the fuel system, and oil the engine up. Also the all the wires going to the coil smoke! What's happening! Please someone give me some insight. Thanks guys.
I sounds like you have the 2 wires going to the solenoid switched, on the solenoid the red/blue wire goes to (S) and the red/green wite goes to (I)
x2 just had the same thing happen with the exception of the wires smoking but I got it turned off real quick
ok did that, it worked, Thank you, it doesn't run away more. But! The solenoid sparks crazy when I bump the key. AHHH. Any more thoughts?
there is a wire from the solenoid, it's black with a orange strip. Maybe something is wrong with the alternator?
Yup thats the one, if its still smoking try taking a voltage meter and check the voltage of both wires, you might be overamping but i highly doubt it.
All good thoughts. I have a extra alternator on the other car. I know that one works. I bought two solenoids while at the parts store. Good thing I did. Thanks again!
Well it's been raining most of the morning here in Ohio so haven't got to changing out that alternator. Anyone else want to chime in on this ?
Sparking means a poor connection! Remove and clean all of the connections to and on the starter, the solenoid, and battery cables. Also do the same for the ground (negative battery cable) The alternator wire connects to the + battery cable on the solenoid. The smoking of the coil wires I don't know. What ignition do you have?
