I just replaced the timing chain on my 2002 dodge dakota 4.7l and went to start it and it made a loud bang coming from the right side head. I thought it was the cam positioning sensor and replaced it and it did the same thing again. I checked all wires for propped installation on everything I took apart and still have the same issue. Can anyone give me pointers on what to do next?

Did you replace the timing chain because the chain slipped or broke? If so you might have a bent valve from the time the engine was still revolving without the chain being connected until it stopped.

I replaced the chain because the right side one was loose. When I took it apart the v8 on both cans was at 12 o'clock including the primary. The crankshaft was at 6 o'clock. I replaced the whole thing including all guides and tensioners.

One more thing it does the loud bang once and that's it. Only after the camshaft position sensor is changed. I read many forums and some are saying that the sensor has a spacer on it. Could that be an issue if there isn't one?

was this " loud bang" a missfire type or a metalic sound?

A loud bang. Sounded like a misfire out of the right head.

Well leseee, it makes bang and damages sensor??? If that's the case, either something is assembled incorrectly, it's the wrong sensor or maybe is missing spacer as has been suggested... Cam & crank sensors make their pulse by a movement of a closely spaced magnet, pulley etc, if sensor is being damaged there probably isn't enough clearance... Which brings us back to the spacer...
