i am looking to put a chevy 4.8/5.3/6.0 ls motor in my comet with a 2wd 4l80 cbevy trans. Any information on thing i would need for the swap to make life easier ? Ex. What oil pan, common issues, mounting brackets, size issues, etc.
71Gold, Franktf and a few others have done the swap. You might want to do a search on LS swaps! Welcome to the forum from Chicago, transportation of the Midwest...
Also, RASelkirk did the swap too; those are the one's that come to mind - on short notice. PM some of the guy's -- very helpful and knowledgeable folks on this forum. Not many things on this forum that someone has not done to these cars. If you go w/ LS -- keep us posted on progress....
I love my car but im in love with ls power. Without wanting to sell my mercury i decided to have the best of both worlds.
Pretty sure most, if not all, of the guys mentioned above have done away with the factory shock towers/suspension in favor of the MII or some style of strut front end. Someone might have done it with the original front suspension, but I can't recall them at the moment.
The LS-1 is just a great motor. You shouldn't do that with a rare, collectible, factory muscle car, but I think the Maverick/Comet is fair game for it.
I have the RC-107 Rod and Custom rack n pinion kit in my car. it took us about 4 hrs. to set the motor/transmission, make motor mount stands, make a crossmember, run the duel exhaust and hook up the driveshaft. if it wasn't for the RC-107 kit I would have left the 347 in it. the Guy that did the work builds dirt track cars, mud trucks, rock crawlers and does motor/trans swaps weekly.
Franktf did the swap w/o total removal of the towers; he modified the towers on his project. You might want to check his lengthy, photo-heavy and detailed build thread -- he is a master builder/fabricator IMO.
