429 Comet 1971 Factory ? In HOT RODS recent issue HRM0220 on page fifteen there is a short article stating that in 1970 this dude named Richard walked into to dealership and ordered a 1971 Comet Cyclone GT with a 429 Engine and Special Paint . Looking at the picture there is a Double Taillight/Brake Light setup along with ANOTHER half a unit which I assume acts as a Back Up Light . Can't see the dash because there is too much debris piled into the front seat. The car looks like it as used as a place to put garbage and items no longer used? I think someone is taking advantage of the Editors of HOT ROD Magazine with this article and their lack of knowledge about Comets and Mavericks. Anyway I thought I'd mention it if anyone is interested . I think this guy is pulling someones leg and just wasn't corrected due to the Editors unfamiliarity with these type cars. Cometized Chip

Looks like a Montego Brougham to me, appears to have the Brougham script on roof pillar If that's what it is could well be one of one, just not a Comet or Cyclone for that matter. All that's necessary to verify is check the body code in VIN. The dealer album pictures script in same location.
It looks like they purposely staged the pictures by shoving any available trash into and around the car, rest of the garage looks clean. Who knows why but the article is useless
I agree with Krazy, that looks to be a Montego MX Brougham. They built 43 of those with 429 4v most likely the N Code. It is a little deceiving in the article and I agree it looks staged. The third light does have the BU light in the middle like the our Comets. Although my Dad referred to his 70 Cyclone Spoiler as a Comet, probably because of growing up with the Cyclone being a designation on the Comets when they first came out.
For '71 the 429 wasn't std in any intermediate, even the Torino Cobra had been cut back to a 351 4v. It could maybe be 429 Cobra Jet with ram air, likely they were only a handful of those at most and because paint/interior combo or fact it didn't have power brakes or did have a AM/FM radio would make it one of one. Very few of the one of one were due to engine option, possibly one 4-speed Cobra Jet Montego MX Brougham. There was ONE '69 4dr Torino built with the 428 Cobra Jet, unfortunately car was junked 15-20 years ago.
The was a 70 Cyclone with a 429, 4 speed and buckets in town some time ago. Sat on a side road for years then disappeared. Would love to be the one that nabbed it. It was even similar in color to this one.
I saw this article and rolled my eyes immediately when the word Comet was used. A 429 was available in the Cyclone as an option. I don't recall ever seeing a vinyl top on a Cyclone, but don't know for sure. On a related note .... a friend had a 1970 Torino with a 429 Cobra Jet/4 speed combo. He would show up to bracket race at the local strip. This was one of the most violent cars leaving the line I ever saw. He had huge street tires to start off and they were useless. He couldn't get them to grip despite this track has always having been over-prepped. He got a pair of good-sized slicks to squeeze onto the car. When he finally got the rpms at launch up to where the slicks wouldn't bog the car, it left hard. The car was usually on it's third bounce cycle at about the 100 foot mark. This was the late 70s and Caltracs were yet to be invented. That car needed them.
