My 72 Maverick with air conditioning is going into the shop to have the heater core replaced. When the heater box is out of the car will it be relatively easy for the mechanic doing the work to get to the dash speaker from below. I plan on having him replace it with a dual voice coil. Thanks
I am going to say no, it will not be easy although it may be easier than when the box is installed. If I remember correctly, the speaker is mounted directly above the center vent/defrost plenum in the dash.
Nothing is easy working under the dash in these cars and you may be opening a can of worms by damaging things or disconnecting wires that they wont know where they go afterwards
If it's anything like working on a 60's Mustang dash you'd be better off doing it yourself. I've worked in dealerships for a loooong time and can say this: No one....and I mean NO ONE is going to take care of your car or work on it with the care in mind that you do.
My Comet has A/C, I replaced speaker over at Brian's shop before I bought car home. Mainly had to remove ductwork to dash outlet, worked from driver side.
I agree, this is the time to remove/replace that speaker. I had my AC box out to replace heat core and generally refurbish internals. I am a music buff, and left the original speaker, opting for kick panel and rear deck installs. If you intend most listening time on AM broadcast than definitely replace dash speaker; if listening mostly FM/CD's etc., you might consider stepping up to something better. JMO!
I sent a radio out for one of those Aurora Design conversions( the blue tooth connectivity is quite nice) and am running speakers in the rear deck. Sounds really good but I figure a front set up will make it even better. Since the heater box is out will give the dual voice coil speaker a try and take it from there.
I went with kick panels that had factory speakers on my '74 but replaced the speaker with a better 5-1/4" speaker. I don't know if a '72 has a place behind the kick panel to fit speakers
