Hey everyone, I’m looking to buy a new carburetor for my 1976 mercury comet with a 302 v8 and was wondering if anyone new of any solid options that won’t break my bank account. Thanks
If you,re worried about your bank account just put any old motorcraft 2 barrel carb on. Old, cheap and reliable.! Any ford guy should have several laying around.
Ike is right. You need to figure out your budget first for a new or reman. You buy used, you get what you get which might not be any better than what you have. If you decide to go aftermarket, Edelbrock will require an adaptor plate to fit a stock Ford intake. I remember this from back when I replaced the one on my dad's 1973 302 Torino with one. Holley should bolt up.
What carb do you have now? I rebuilt a 2 barrel motorcraft/autolite carb late 80's. No youtube or internet to help me! I Wasnt that smart then and I did it! Try!!! Try rebuilding first!
I'd say save up for a 4-barrel intake, and either a Holley or Edelbrock carb. The only cheap alternative that is sensible would be to rebuild the original carb...
A couple cans of carb cleaner, rebuild kit and couple hours should set you back about $50. Probably a bazillion 2100/2150 Autolite Motorcraft rebuilds on Youtube.
Great suggestion BUT he needs to answer. 1.What wrong with car? 2. Might be a ignition or tuning problem? 3. What work have you done to gain experience. Tuning a 4barrel could be a pain. That's why I suggested flirting with your 2 barrel. 4. What carb do you want?
The car is running rich and also cranks for a few minutes before firing up every time I turn it on. So far I’ve replaced the whole brake system, suspension, starter and selenoid, alternator and a few other things. I’m completely self taught from watching YouTube videos and reading the owners manual. I like the idea of getting a 4 barrel but I’m content with a 2 barrel as money’s tight at the moment.
LOL!!! You should have stated your running rich and hard starting problem from very beginning. Tune-up? List all you,ve replaced and adjust. Great job replacing the other stuff!
