I meant to say plug weld. I don't have any hands on exp. on body work. I ask cuz I don't see any welds on the QP. Did u weld frm the outside/underside? I assume the dark area where the rocker/QP meet is where the bond adhesive.
Working in the auto resto business for 15 yrs surely makes a positive difference in ur excellent body work ability along w/ acquiring a lot of the tools/equipment that make life easier..

Hey Glenn, I know you like flames, here's an idea for you. I kind of did the same thing you did starting the nose kind of "stock" with the 72 style split stripe. I don't comment all the time but I do enjoy watching the quality of your work transpire, and I'm always watching, just like big brother.:D

Hey Ward, I really like that. You have done a nice job with the layout. Please post up pictures of it all done. Or at least send me an email, I would like to see it finished.

For the last 15 years the license plate on my truck has been "On.Fire". I like to flame things. But for some reason on the Maverick I really want to be different than the way I normally go and not flame it. Most of my friends don't believe that I am going to be able to resist the temptation to do it anyway. Time will tell I guess?

Todays update includes some good news and some bad news.....

While my wife and two daughters went out shopping yesterday I was able to get a nice 6 hour therapy session in the garage. And what a session it was!

    The Good....

I started off by rough cutting the old quarter panel off the car, then one by one drilling out all the spot welds.

Here is what I started with:

With the old quarter completely cut off and all welds ground smooth:

Test fit the trunk floor drop off:

Just like the driver side I had to replace the lip of the outer wheel house. I again used the lip from the skins I had purchased a long time ago and decided not to use. An expensive way to get nice fitting outer wheel houses for sure. But since I had them and had already decided to go with NOS quarters, well mine as well use them.

I then sanded everything down on the inner structure and primed it all with two coats of PPG's PD90LF epoxy primer.

Getting ready to final weld the quarter in place.

    Fully welded.

    Day two, Sunday morning:

All of that done I decided to grind off the passenger door skin. I was shocked how little primer the door had on the inside and how much rust there was. I am so thankful for having a pair of NOS door skins. I would have hated to fix the pin holes this door has, only to have it rust threw in another spot shorty after finishing the car.

    And now the bad......

With the door skin out of the way I decided now would be a good time to slide one of the power window regulators in place to show you all how it mounts and fits in the car. And it doesn't fit:cry:

The motor hits the bottom of the door. Because of that it will not allow me to swing into place and install all the mounting bolts. Before putting power to it and seeing if the motor will then swing out of the way I figured I should shoot Nu_Relics and email with pictures and see what they think. I don't want to do something and then have them tell me I voided any warranty. Here are a couple pictures to show you whats up. Once I hear back from them I will update you all.

So thats it for this weekends update. Plenty more to come!

Awesome progress on the sheetmetal. Curious why you took the quarter off in two pieces? .... Were you thinking of trying to save the upper?

Looking at reskinning my driver door here. Any documentation that you can show here on that door when you get to it would be appreciated ... new territory for me.

    Hey nut,

I've never done the power window motor install on a Mav, but i have done trim work for a Ford dealership for years. Most of the time, even on the older window motors, the motor itself is to the inside of the door, in your pictures it looks like you have the motor on the skin side of the door. Just wondering if the motors are LH and RH marked ?

I was originally planning on just replacing the lower area with those skins that Autocrafters sells. But after getting them and seeing how poorly they fit I decided to stick it out and locate NOS.

I will make sure to take many pictures of the reskinning of the doors for you. It's not hard at all.

Dave, How do I tell what plant the car came from? I do know the car spent it's life in Alabama until 1988 when it came to Connecticut.

I am using the new regulators and motors as they came to me from Nu-Relcs. They were pre assembled and labeled left and right? I do have an email with pictures to them. They asked for a few more and said the problem should be able to be rectified. I guess this is just part of being the Guinea pig. I think that if they had the door at the time of the manufacturing that they would have been able to check fitment. No issues, I am confident it will all work out for the best!

Thanks for the info. With that bit of knowledge I can tell you I have a K, so it looks like the car was built in Kansas.

Yes, and it appears Kansas cars were not dipped in E-coat like St.Thomas cars..I wonder if that's why the light surface rust is so extensive..??.. I've noticed that the inner surfaces of St.Thomas cars are different in color compared to Kansas built, different processes I guess.
One of my customers was a engineer for Ford at St.Thomas, and one of his projects was the e-coat system.
