Guy has a grabber for sale on eBay. He states he has no title and something. about the chain of command being broken in state of Georgia and selling bill of sale only. Looks like a decent car but what can ya do about title issue?
If a title isn't required in the sellers state, usually the state that you want to title it in will issue one, but you must have a registration showing it was in fact registered in the no title state... Just a bill of sale won't do it...
I am in CT, and we are a non title state as well. So here it is a no issue kind of thing. Does your state require a title? Can he prove ownership?
I did it here in Wisconsin, and it was fairly easy but did cost a bit extra to do. First, call your states capitol DMV main office and ask them exactly what you need to do. Make sure when you call that they know this is a classic car. They deal with this issue 20 times a day and will tell you the way to get a clean title. Here in Wisconsin, I asked about those title companies that advertise online, promising titles, and Wisconsin told me flat out they would reject one of those if I tried to submit it. They instructed me to get a signed and notorized bill of sale. A letter of explanation as to why there is no title. In my case the car had been off the road since 1985 and the former state it was registered in did not keep records after 7 years. So applying for a lost title was useless. I needed the Sheriff to stop by and inspect the VIN for tampering and run it for any records. I needed a bond for like, 3 times the value of the car. Shop around for bonding companies, I paid like $150 for mine and found prices as high as $1000. All in all, a few extra hoops to jump through but it got me a clean and bonded title. Hope this helps.
the best thing to do is buy the car in person AFTER calling dmv to see what it will take to get it registered in your name. if its been forever since it was registered thats a good thing because then no one will have records of when the car was last registered so like someone else said a few more hoops to go through a couple of forms to fill out and its all yours
I bought a truck in california without a title and after a bunch of calls to dmv and then to some other people that dmv said MIGHT have had previous ownership of the truck I finally got dmv to just have me fill out a different form and take my money oh and I had to tow it to dmv for inspection of the vin and have it weighed I dont remember if I had to have a brake and lamp inspection or not but in the end I wound up with a title. if you buy the car dont pay more than you think you can part it out for since there is a chance that might have to happen. it all depends on the person at the window at the dmv. one clerk will say oh yeah just fill this out and pay this and another will say oh well no title or proof of ownership from the seller no luck for you
I just went through this. I live in Texas and sold a car to someone in another state. I had the car over a year and never put the car in my name and it only had a bill of sale. In Texas you have to have something that proved the car was registered in the state it came from. Luckily I had an old registration which worked. The buyer was patient and I got a Texas title and sold him the car. I would contact your DMV and see what your state requires.
It's chain of ownership, not command. What that means is that the current owner/seller is not the last legally registered owner of the vehicle, so if it were to be registered in the state of Georgia, the police have to come out and inspect the vehicle and run the VIN to insure it's not stolen.
Produce a bill of sale and the state of Georgia will give you a letter stating it was registered in Georgia that you can take to your states DMV. You can clarify this at your local DMV. Not a big deal.
