Hey everyone, new account on here but Ive been lurking for awhile now Reading threads And getting as much info as I can regarding Mavericks!

I just purchased a 72 Maverick that has a running driving 302 with a C4. It is in desperate need of restoring/building up and Im sure Im bound to have several questions along the way as Im not familiar with these cars in the slightest. I just finished my pro touring 68 fastback build that took me about a year and a half. I did everything with my kids in our garage and had the car down to a shell at one point and cut off from the firewall forward. The 68 has a t56 magnum thats been built up, a fab9 rear that can handle about 1800hp, and the motor is a 363 with a new D1x, that makes over 1000hp at the flywheel on its low boost tune.

I definitely have the skills to do what I want to this car, howEver Im finding it difficult to find the parts I need to build it how I want. So heres my long winded first bog question I have regarding parts for this car. Im wondering about the steering column, I have to replace it anyway as its messed up pretty bad, but I will be installing a floor shifter with a manual valvebody and a 4r70 with a transbrake. I also want to have tilt steering, and I will try to install a manual rack in my car so it needs to hook to that. Could anyone point me in the direction of a column? I have an ididit on my mustang and they have nothing for a maverick. When I looked at universal ones they didnt seem to have any with the key on the column, nor ford wiring. I will rewire car anyway so thats not an issue but leads to question 2. What wiring kit is everyone liking? I have American Autowire in my mustang, again they dont make a maverick version! Argh!

Ive read on here about the highway 15 Kits but it seems like a lot of extra stuff to make it work in the car and then you dont have the factory connectors in most places. Anyway thanks for any info

One place that often doesn't fail is Auto Krafters. However, there are no complete columns there. I looked for you. Often, many parts from the Granada/Monarch lines do fit so that is one way to look. Truthfully, I'd be surprised if there are aftermarket columns for those but it doesn't hurt to look. Some Mustang and Cougar parts also can be adapted to fit. I found that when I ordered my replacement aftermarket aluminum radiator for my Mav, it also fits several Mustang and Cougar models so it leads one to believe that other parts may be adaptable also. The possibility does exist that you'd have to build the column wiring from scratch so I'd strongly advise finding a shop manual for 1972. They do come up on eBay and some obsolete manual dealers could be able to help also. There are several online. Placing an ignition switch in or below the dash may be something you may have to consider with an aftermarket column.

Back when I restored both my 1976 models, I found a complete set of Ford shop manuals and held onto them like gold. Good thing I never got rid of them after the cars were sold as they cover 1975 also and that's what I have now.

I've attached a pdf of the 2021 Auto Krafters catalog here for you.

A few guys have put the flaming river and Ididt columns in their cars. They did have to use custom wiring harness though. A buddy of mine did take a ranchero steering column and grafted it onto a maverick one to have a tilt column. Looks factory and works great.

Interesting, do you know by chance does the ford wiring stay the same between cars?

It’s not 100% the same but with a good wiring diagram it isn’t too hard to splice together connectors and make it work.

And thus why you need a shop manual or at least a wiring diagram.
