Pertronix Flame Thrower Drive gear

so apparently the flame thrower D134600 on summits sight is being advertised with a cast iron gear when it really has a hardened steel gear, just saw a review where a customer blew up his motor because of this misinformation. I have the same distributor in my car but haven't fire it up yet with the new distributor and now I'm glad I haven't. But the question is where can I get a cast iron gear to fit the flame thrower. Waiting to hear back from petronix on this issue. Makes me want to just go back to the Ford DSII set up or points

 

Summit Racing sells distributor gears. I would make certain of what gear you have first before ordering another.

 

I called pertronix because I needed a steel gear for my roller 5.0 They told me none of their distributors have a steel gear... They told me all were iron... I ended up buying the summit brand distributor...

Have you confirmed you have the incorrect gear? did ya look at yours?

 

Hard to tell the difference if you don't know what to look for.

My problem was the other direction. I know it is a roller cam, but not sure of the brand and cannot confirm it needs a steel gear. Using one, and hasn't blown up yet.

Any idea how long it would take before you see some damage on either the cam or the gear?

 

Havent herd back from them yet still waiting. How do you tell the difference between cast and steel gears? Did another search and found another review about the drive gear issue another customer saying its the wrong gear on it for a cast cam.

 

I would think there would be casting lines or marks on them, I don't really know.

 

Easiest way to tell is cast will be rough like typical non-machined cast iron on the bottom face, which is flat in this picture. This one is bronze, but a hard steel one will be pretty smooth on the bottom, as well.

Also rough along the sides of the top collar.

The steel is machined all over, the cast gear has portions as Scoop said that are rough cast.

 

The gear on the petronix is steel, Is the shaft diameter on the petronix the same as a stock ford distributor?

 

I have used 2 different pertronix dizzys in my 1995 roller 302. They are definitely steel. I had over 5000 miles on my first one and gear looked brand new.

 

I must have got an idiot when I called Pretronix, They told me I would have to buy a steel gear because all theirs were cast iron... I really wanted to use one on my 95 roller...
