73 comet. Locked steering wheel. Can't get the keys to turn. Been this way a week. Need it fixed. Help me out fellas and ladies
Are the wheels turned all the way to the left or right??? If so...Try pulling the steering wheel in the opposite direction the wheels are turned and try to turn the key.If not...You may have a bound up lock cylender, you can try spraying som lubricant into it and working the key in it. Or, the key may be so worn that its not engageing the tumblers in the lock properly anymore. It could also be a problem with the lock rod in the column...The stuff is 40 yrs old. Good luck
Just to the left a little. I got it once but then it locked up seconds later. I haven't tried spray. What spray should I use? I turn it to the left turn key I feel a click but it doesn't go any further
You may want to take the weight off the front wheels, this will allow the steering to "free up". Then steer the wheel right and left while turning the key. Don't know if it will work but you won't be fighting the heavy wheel drag and along with WD-40, you may get lucky.
If you have a 3spd shift (column) make sure the car is all the way in reverse. Same with an automatic trans (column) make sure you are all the way in park.
