My stock 1972 Mav with the 250 6 cyl is acting wierd and it's got me baffled. When driving it will just shut off, like turning the key off. I throw it in neutral, turn the key off, start it up and off it goes. It's completely random when this happens. Doesn't coincide when I hit bumps, whether it's wet or dry, turning or going straight. It has a new distributer, new coil, new ignition switch, new starter selenoid and new voltage regulator. I can drive it a hundred miles and it doesn't happen but sometimes it happens several times in 20 miles. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Was it happening before the parts were replaced?

    Sounds like a loose connection.

Ignition switch or neutral safety would be on my list of things to check.

Great idea on the neutral safety switch. I didn't think of that. Will check it. Thanks

all the parts were replaced 3 years ago. We drove it from Indiana to S. Carolina and no probs. I put it away for the winter and the problem started this summer.

I think the neutral safety switch is only going to stop the starter from engaging while in gear. It shouldn't have any effect on the ignition cutting out at random while driving.

As stated by jtown 77, I would be looking for a loose/corroded connection.

I will definately check all the connections again. But the freaky thing is it always starts right back up without hesitation and drives away. And I have problems with the neutral safety switches before on mustangs I've owned. Just didn't think of it.

On second thought, I think I have to agree with you on that. Red/blue to the solenoid. I was remembing mine when it wouldnt let me start the car for no apparent reason.

Check to make sure you don't have any terminals on the plug for the ignition switch sticking out. I had this happen when I replaced an ignition switch. The plastic plug doesn't hold the terminals to well after 42 years! Disconnect the battery ground cable and use a small allen key to push them all the way in. The plug for the headlight switch will sometimes have this problem too. :)

I would start the car up and start moving wires in the engine compartment see if the engine quits . maybe start at the firewall plug for the fuse box.

My '74 was doing the same thing a couple years ago Only thing different is I didn't turn the key off before restarting. A lot of people was telling me it was the Duraspark so I swapped to Pertronix and still had a problem. I ended up replaced the ignition switch and the problem cleared up. One day I want to swap back to my Duraspark
