Okay out at the shop putting a new water pump on the new 408, start it up to check for leaks, after reaching normal operating temp. I was looking it over, I spotted a leak but not water, it was the flipping oil filter! grabbed a wrench to check to see if it was tight enough, soon as I put the wrench on it and applied a little pressure it started shooting oil out the end of it, WTH it's a Purolator Pure One PL24561, looking it over and I can't believe how thin the metal is on this thing, I believe my oil pressure blew a small hole in it and the wrench just finished it off, good thing it was in the shop and not out on the highway, I have 60# of oil pressure at idle but I don't know how much it gets up to, this thing is very thin in the metal on the end, gonna raise some hell about it you bet!
If you want to see what they are made of, cut them apart when you do an oil change. That is why I no longer use Fram filters. I have found that Motocraft works the best for me. Walmart sell's them cheap.
Like I said cut them apart and see how they are made ! I cut my filters open EVERY time I change the oil in my street car and my race car !
That's okay, rest assured I told them I was unhappy, if folks don't let companies know about a product they manufacture, how will anything ever get improved upon or even quality tested.
These days Purolator filters aren't of the quality we knew in the past... Had issues with the ADBV(anti drain back valve) letting oil escape filter and flow back into pan(no oil pressure for a few seconds on a cold start)... Yet to have a issue with Motorcraft, which interestingly are mfgd by Purolator... A premium Mobil 1 filter on one of the Grand Marquis has also had ADBV issues... Started knocking(timing chain slap) on start up within three weeks of its last change, repl with a Motorcraft and it's still on there at 6500 mi without issue... The Fram Extra Guard are actually very good filters, their common OCD(orange can of death)constantly gets a bad rap as ten years ago were junk, now are much improved...
Obviously Ford Motorcraft filters are not made by Ford however, the Motorcraft filters regardless of who manufactures them must meet Ford engineering specifications. A drain back valve is required in the Ford specification as-well-as paper element composition and the thickness of the filter wall. You would be surprised how many competitive filters do not have a drain back valve. Many years ago if you were to cut open a Motrocraft filter the filtering element looked like a ball of string. There filtering capability was far superior to anything on the market at that time.
Well I did get a response from Purolator............... Thank you for your inquiry. Purolator Filters are warrantied against manufacturing defects and if a filter is determined to be defective it will be replaced free of charge. When it comes to reviewing and assessing a specific filter warranty question, inquiries are most efficiently addressed by calling us directly on our Filter Hotline at 800-526-4250. A filter retrieval kit will be sent to you to return the filter in question for thorough testing and assessment in our engineering testing lab. Please understand that Purolator does not delete posts. However, after reviewing your post this morning, I did choose to isolate it until we could speak with you directly about the specific circumstance you described. It is our mission to provide top quality products to our customers and we welcome the opportunity to work with you on this issue. And then got............... Purolator Roger, it was great speaking with you the other day. We have new product coming to you this week. It shipped from our plant in NC yesterday. Please let me know how this works for you. Thank you! And today I got............ So....need a filter?
Glad to see they did not give the shuffle. I have never had a problem w/ Purlator filters. I have one on my Comet now "PL30001". I run abt 70psi @ idle cold and abt 40 @ 200deg. I have used a lot of them over the years w/o issue. I guess u can get a defect in anything -- Just hope it won't be costly.
That was pretty cool of them! If I wasn't a tried and true firm user of FL1A I might give that Purolator a try. FWIW--I found that the FL1A also fits my Dodge 5.7 Hemi, and holds about an extra quart over the stock filter. Been running them on my truck since the beginning. Just turned over 285,000 miles last week. So they sure are not HURTING anything.
You're wrong there, they have a ANTI-drain back valve(and AFAIK all have one, whether it functions is a different story)... It's purpose is keep the filter full of oil, or in other words prevent gravity from siphoning oil in filter back into the oil pan, causing dry start... Motorcraft's version seems to be a little better than many, I've had Purolator filters for 5.0 and 4.6 that were defective and a Mobil 1 for a 4.6 fail causing clatter on start up...
