car vibrates when you put it in gear, no problem while in park or driving, (till you stop).sounds like the engine is vibrating on the body ,but I can't see it hitting anywhere. It goes away as soon as you start to take off ,starts again when you stop. Exhaust not touching anywhere and a new transmission mount, its a 72 200 automatic ,just wondering if anyone has any idea what it could be .

is it the feel of a vibration or the noise of a rattle from a vibration?
if the idle speed is too low in gear the motor could shake pretty good.

actually the engine runs very smooth, just sounds like metal on metal type harmonics thru the car , but as soon as you go it goes away , it has to be something I'm missing ,

i tried raising the idle just by giving it a little gas with my foot on the brake and that doesn't change it, but instantly goes away when you start to move , thanks for any advise.

Put it up on jackstands, put in drive. If it still vibrates get somebody to assist in the cab while you crawl around listening for the source. If it doesn't do it up on stands start looking at suspension, exhaust or any other parts that are hanging.

i first would be looking over the exhaust system for it contacting anything it shouldnt. also i would bang on it with a fist in different areas to see if it rattles.
if nothing shows up then id be looking the motor mounts to see if they are collapsed.

Sounds like a similar issue I had when I first got my car, drove me nuts until I figures out it was the front license plate wobbling around (in drive and at idle only). Might be worth checking the bracket, I think I bent mine to create more tension holding the plate against the rubber stops more effectively. Haven’t hear it since then.

I wish that was it but it did it before I put the bracket and plate on , I'm definitely going to look at the motor mounts tomorrow, just looking at them they appear to be ok but maybe one is bad

not to hard if you have a jack to lift the motor off the mount.

yep one at a time. either on balancer if you can securely reach it or under the oil pan with a big enough block of wood to spread the load evenly across the bottom of the pan. you will need to release both mounts from their frame stands at the same time. then one at a time from the motor.
