I installed a new fuel sender unit today good thing mine was nasty and it still reads empty, I'm going to pick up a volt meter tomorrow and test the wires but in the meantime does anybody have any suggestions thanks
Pull the plug off of the sender. There are two "plugs" inside of the plug. Short them together with a temporary wire and turn the key on. Should read full at the dash. If it does...wiring is fine/fuel sender is not. If it does not...you have a wiring/electrical problem and the fuel sender is probably fine.
If I remember correctly the fuel sender gets it's pulse from the voltage regulator on the back of the gauge cluster. It has a connection like a 9v battery. It only take 2 minutes to change, but to get to it, you have to pull the gauge cluster, which can be a pain. looks like this. http://dennis-carpenter.com/instrument-cluster-voltage-regulator/p/C9AZ-10804-A/
ok i tried jumping the wires at the fuel sender and got nothing at the gauge, i unplugged the wires in the trunk that go through the floor to the sending unit and nothing
One of the wires on tank sender plug will be yellow & white, ground that wire to chassis... If it reads you have a ground issue on sender plug(black wire)... If there is still a problem you should find the yellow & white wire at plug near kick panel... Again ground to chassis, no reading indicates a gauge, voltage regulator(on back of cluster), circuit board issue or no power to the cluster on the Black & Lt Green wire...
