    Hello all,

I'm getting ready to black-out the tail light panel on my '73 2-door. Can someone provide pictures of the painted panel without the bumper, end caps, fillers etc...? Trying to decide how far to paint around and down.

I may convert this to 70-72 rear bumper brackets. I have a set of the 70-72 rear bumper filler pieces that fasten below the Grabber spoiler endcaps; they have one stud each and a hole, what type of screw/bolt was used to attach this?

Also, will those pieces cover up the holes from the larger fiberglass '73 filler pieces which had 5 studs I believe?

    Thanks

Paul Masson was kind enough to provide these to me when I had the same question. So, thanks goes to him.

This is for a '71. I believe it is the same for what you need.

Paul, I hope you don't mind.

On the small lower rear quarter extensions, the "hole" is there to allow the lower bolt on the UPPER quarter extension to pass thru it.

You will have some holes to fill on the body when you switch from 1973 to 1970-1972 lower quarter extensions.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone ever done this with just painting the actual oval section black only?

I'm wondering if it would look better to have the body color wrap around the black in the center? Also I wonder why the center section in the trunk jam was done that way.

    Craig,

Kinda in the same area, is there a source for the black oval fuel tank seal in the trunk? Also is there a gasket for reinstalling the fuel neck, the factory one was cork.

Depending on the factory the car was built in, the tape treatment was done differently at the top edge of taillight panel.

I think SCS recently posted some pictures of this.

If you are doing a base/clear, you will run into issues where your single stage flat black paint meets your base/clear. You can't cut and buff to the line and you might have adhesion issues at the edge of the black.

No worries. That's why the Forum exists.

For reference, my car (pictured above) is a Kansas-built 1971 model built in Early October 1970.

The original paint on my car looks to have a slight texture to it.

Those items are all available from the usual parts sources. They are exactly the same as the early Mustang.

Trying to decide if I should leave the end of the panel (where the bumper mounts) body color or do it all black like factory.

I've blacked out the last three cars built and an unlikely benefit of doing this is the increased visibility of the taillights on a Maverick , AND a Comet . My Comet is RED and before I painted the panel black I was told more than once by other drivers that I didn't have any BRAKE LIGHTS ... ( Wrong ) .. I had brake lights .. but they " blended " in with the Surrounding Red of the Car /// Easy fix.. Just my take on this.

Agree! My Maverick back in 1974 had a dented rear bumper like most every Maverick rear bumper you will find. Here is how I plan to blackout mine and I will have finished pictures in a few days (I found many variations on blackout and all have their advantages). I may add some pin stripes. I hope to find some newer lighting technology that will increase the rear light brightness, but that is late on my restoration priorities.

I'd black-out the entire panel. Looks best that way.

I did mine a little differenty where the two colors meet in the trunk. Just thought it looked a little better. The paint is satin black. All paint is base coat clear coat.
