Hi everyone! I finally got the cowl removed and need to remove rust and rebuild. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on interchangeable parts or know where I can purchase a cowl from a donor Maverick? My car is a 74.
I used reproduction sections for a Mustang for the rings and also some of the curved pieces that came with those sections - the entire section is not a direct fit but some of the areas of the new steel worked out great
Sorry, I didn't make that note in my list of purchased parts - you might be able to match up something going on the web site for CJ Pony Parts
OK, I found some photos of my cowl repairs - I believe they are the same exact pieces that I used, but like I said, I used pieces of the replacement panel to do my repairs - here are some photos
If you have the ability to get in there, you no doubt have the ability to make those work! I am so thankful I don't have that issue.
Yeah that was my biggest problem. I have it torn down. I've taken it to a local old school auto restorer who's gonna fab. and weld the cowl. Ive taken out the windshield and taken down the headliner removed carpets and seats. I plan on replacing windshield gaskets, carpets and head liner. Does anyone have any suggestions of any other things I should do before putting it back together. I was contemplating taking the motor out now and doing some things to it. Any thoughts?
You might want to consider undercoating the inside floor pans while you have the carpet out. You can never have too much protection on that old metal.
have him Rust bullet everything under the cowl...http://www.rustbullet.com/?source=adwords&gclid=CN_VocG4ucoCFQovaQodXokGMg
I am too... NOW! And I also now have a great appreciation for anyone who has to fix this issue. That's usually how it ends up... http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/paul-massons-71-grabber.92251/ I would also be sure to weld a temporary brace across the inside of the car just below the A-pillar area in case the car springs outward. i would also suggest installing the wiper motor and transmission onto the lower cowl panel so that you can line-up the wiper post holes in the cowl cover before you weld it back together.
I've been putting this task off for a while now, but it has to be done. I have the car prepped down to windshield removal. I don't know how or what tools I need to get the windshield out. I was able to get a good donor cowl (pictured), spot weld cutter, and a good drill. I don't have a place indoors to do this job , so any suggestions would be appreciated. Also I am deleting the air conditioning.]
Plan on buying a new rubber gasket for the windshield. Cut the front part of the rubber gasket off the windshield and it will pop right out. the only thing more common than rotten cowls on these cars is dried-out, cracked and leaking windshield gaskets, so get a new one for installation. You can duct tape the window back in overnight if you're worried about leaving it outside.
