Edelbrock 1406 - dies at idle when hot

    So, my 302 idles ok (I wouldn't say great cold, but not bad). When it gets hot, it dies in drive at idle. I found a video online that said adjusting the idle mixture screws might help. Didn't matter much on either one, either one closed increased idle a bit, either one open (removed) increased idle a bit. I didn't actually moved the idle adjustment screws.

    How do I tune the carb to fix this problem? Assuming I need to up the low idle screw a tad. Will that make the idle mixture screws have any effect?

    I'm not yet a carb tuner. I'll learn though.

    How did you route your gas line? I am having the same problem and it turned out to be vapor lock due to the gas getting too hot. You might want to grab a heat sensor and see what temp your fuel line is while the car is hot.

    Well, when I got it, I drove it a few times last fall and all was fine. Then on a rather warm Oct day, I drove it for a bit and stopped for fuel. It died as I pulled up to the pump. Had trouble getting it started. Once started and on my way, it died every stop sign. I finally got it home and took a look. The fuel line comes in on the drivers fender and has a piece of fuel hose about 8" long that connects to a small black cannister. There's a hose from there that went across the front of the engine to a clear plastic fuel filter (I know, I need to replace it) and then on around to the passenger side of the carb.

    I noticed that black canister was laying on the header pipe, which I knew would be a vapor lock problem. I rerouted the fuel lines by zip-tieing the canister to the ignition module to make sure it wasn't on the header, and routed the fuel line along the fender brace to the rear of the carb and over to the passenger side. Seemed to have solved the problem.

    I guess it concerns me that the mixture screws had little or no effect.

    on the mixture screws you need to learn how to use a vacum gauge to set them AFTER you clean the carb. watching that needle tells all.

    adjust with vac gauge turn up the idle if it is too low it will die in gear check hoses for vac leaks
