I'd have to put a red top back on it. That would look really good with the right wheels and tires.

I'm thinking that might be the right thing to do. Red stripes, red taillight panel?

Wow, awesome color combo.. you should get the statistics report for it. Takes a while to get it but it's only $60 bucks and well worth it, IMHO.

The red top option made me hunt my report down and as I guessed.. our cars are like red headed polar opposites of each other. Close in KC production dates too.. roughly 8,000 units between them. My white with red top also has a red bucket interior and I bet that would be pretty rare on black cars too. According to Marti my red top option was glued onto 36 White Comet GT's in 1971.

Now some might say I'm partial(ehem.. avatar).. but for an all black car like that I would go with matching red stripes.. or do up the rear panel in matching argent silver to better coordinate with the silver side stripes so they don;t get left hanging out in limbo with no other color combo tie-in. Better yet.. install the Grabber rear decklid spoiler with matching silver stripes too. One of my all time favorite color combos.. black and silver looks awesome on almost anything.

sorry.. late reply time.. too much multi-tasking going on. lol

My advice is to be careful about too much red on the tail panel. Ask me how I know. Mine is all red(for now) and it hasn't fully grown on me yet. Which is usually a bad sign after 6 months that it never will. Planning to shrink the red portion down inside the recessed flat panel and then delineating it with a bold red stripe out nearer the edge of the flat panel. This will fool the eye into thinking the red section is slightly smaller. Then add your red striped Grabber spoiler and you're solidly into the finals. Only trained eyes will know it's not factory. :thumbs2:

I was just thinking about getting the statistics report. If its rare enough, I may go ahead with the red top.

Ever since my father bought the car, I've been thinking "First thing I'd do is put a grabber spoiler on it!" it needs one, bad. Changes the whole car, in my opinion. But if I go with the red top it would be for originality, and the spoiler would... spoil that;) I guess. So it looks like one or the other, but definitely not both. I'm with you on the black / silver combo, if only there was a way to find out what stripes it came with.

unless your're going after some pure stock award at really big car shows?.. nobody will ever say "that car would look better without the stripe color matched spoiler". Look around at some of the Brazilian themes.. some are badass OEM looking.

IMHO, yep.. here it comes.. I've said it before.. Ford really got cheap and lazy compared to the other automakers when it came time to orient this car towards the sportier crowd. If there'd have been more stripe color choices these cars could have been an even more popular effort. Stripes matched to vinyl top colors, blue interior/blue stripes, red interior/red stripes, etc. Don't get me wrong.. your car is great.. I like mine too.. but the lifelong painter in me cringes every time I see 4 different colors(not including the tires and chrome that breaks everything up even more) on the same car. Body one color.. top another.. interior another.. and then stripes yet another. Kinda ends up looking unplanned and mishmashed together like all the color choices were done randomly of each other.

My advice would be to search tons of mavericks and comet to get inspiration for what you like. Have to trust me here.. Dad would never disown you for doing a red side stripe and Brazilian tail treatment. He knows what it was like to be younger too. Express yourself tastefully.. and in some type of semi-coordinated effort/lol.. and everyone comes out a winner.

If it were my car?.. red hood stripe, red side stripe, red Grabber tail stripe. Even then though.. I'd have a very tough time second guessing why I didn't use an argent top/stripe combo instead. Done to factory spec's.. nobody(except the people who know lots about these cars uncoordinated color combos) will ever know it's not factory stock. Argent grill and tail panel treatments really set these cars apart from "regular factory offerings" too.

I don't know if I would do the red tail light panel, but the red side stripes and hood stripe along with the grabber spoiler with the red stripe across the back of it would be cool. It already looks great and can only get better. - Matt

Never have I seen a black 71-72 GT with red vinyl tops.
I have seen numerous all original black GT's and they all came with silver stripes on the side and black tail panels and hood stripes.
I have seen '73-'75 GT's in black with white side stripes, again black tail panels and hood stripes.

Well I have to agree on the statistics report. Took a while, but definitely worth it! 20170128_175224.jpg

Nice! But maybe not the combo everyone would like. Definitely unique. - Matt
