Car wouldn’t start. Has been losing power for a while so I suspected something was wrong but I had no idea how bad it was.
If you need a gas tank I have a Brand New one that has been "Centered" like Frank`s (71gold) that I would like to sell. I`m in Macon and I`m the guy with the fender you wanted to see pics of.
Cool! I'm not sure about centering the tank (I was planning to use that space) but if the price is right I might give it a shot. What capacity is it and does it include the sending unit?
19.2 Gallon. I dont have a sending unit. Here is a link to 71golds write up. http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/centering-stock-gas-tank.98485/
My tank was fairly crusty too. I sent it to a radiator shop for cleaning, and got it back with some pinholes that were not soldered completely shut (I could see daylight from the inside) and still had rusty chunks rattling around in it. I decided to power wash it myself and dump the water, repeat 4 times, POR 15 the outside, Tank sealer the inside, Re-furbished my sending unit, and put it back in. It works, gauge works......but $ 90 for rad shop + por 15+ two quarts tank sealer + thinner = nearly $200 spent. I did not have to modify my vent or mounting straps or sender wiring, but I do not have 19 gallon capacity either. I had to take it back out to clean the tank sealer out of the vent (things you learn during your first try at stuff). Just passing it along for what it is worth. (I think that large tank requires different straps?) I wound up putting in a 3" single exhaust and used the factory muffler location for a giant turbo muffler......so I was glad I did not alter the tank location.
That is pretty nasty looking .......... Curious how it got that way. Do you use ethanol blended fuels?
I drove it daily up until 2015 when I changed jobs. I-285 is a little scary in that car around a whole bunch of people with no respect for anyone else. So I drove it on the weekends mainly until just over a year ago when someone cut me off and then slammed on the brakes in front of me. I hit the guy because evasive maneuvers would have risked the guy in the next lane hitting me from behind. The brakes performed flawlessly, it was just unavoidable without endangering someone else. I managed to scrub off enough speed that the damage was minimal considering the speed we were moving before it happened but unfortunately it wasn’t in any shape to drive and it sat. I had started running ethanol free fuel about 3 years ago when a station opened near me that sold it but I’m sure this had started earlier than that. It sitting idle probably just made it worse. Once the rust starts, I don’t think there’s much you can do. I’m going to replace the tank one way or the other but I need to modify it for a sump. I’ve put off fixing that fuel starvation problem long enough and this situation just makes me fix it.
There has been a few members that put a Tanks Inc gas tank in. I know its a mustang tank but it is a easy mod and has a built in sump, and a place for the in tank pump. Nick Dominick has one mounted under his car.
My car has a centered '69 Mustang tank, was installed before I got it... Brian said Mav/Comet straps fit, needing a spacer to take up a little slack as Stang tank is wider but thinner... If I remember correctly, he said the filler also has to be changed to the Mav/Comet neck...
69 mustang in mine also... Write up on here about it... Was cheaper than a Mav tank, and less than the local radiator shop wanted to coat a motorcycle tank for my brother's bike... Gave room for dual exhaust too...
