I believe most guys are using a stock starter form a 1990’s 5.0.

Do the 1990's starters have the 157tooth gears for his setup?

Same starter for 57 tooth and 164 tooth if using automatic transmission. The 164 tooth on a manual transmission is different starter

I used a stock 5.0 mini starter off a 93 mustang I think? Works fantastic.

But that's only on early engines, I think you have to go all the way back to mid/late '60s 289 before the starters are different between auto and manual.

    EDIT

Looks like there are different late auto & stick starters, actually easy to tell if you know the difference, stick starters have a shorter nose than auto. In the late '60s & '70 I used the long noise auto on everything(which was a '69 351, 4-speed Fairlane). I've even installed three bolt FE starters on small blocks.

I've had one of the ebay PMGR $35 specials on the Comet since '14. Also one on my '96 5.0 F150. for last couple years.

Does anyone know why ford made a 164 tooth bellhousing and flexplate to begin with?

Back when the 164 was used in trucks and maybe fullsize models. For C4 easily ID by the pan fill transmissions. As time progressed and Ford modified the C4 into C5, most all auto trans morphed into 164T(I believe all C6 are 164 & all AOD are 164). Late 5.0 stick generally have a 157T, HD applications a 164.
