I am having a problem, my windshield was leaking on my 74 Comet so I replaced the seal with one from AutoKrafters. I made sure that the windshield and the frame was 100% cleaned (I even removed all of the sticky butyl.), I put the new seal on the glass and I put new butyl along the bottom of the frame and up the sides about 4". I put the glass in the car and water tested it, guess what' it leaked. we pulled it back out cleaned everything again redid the butyl and this time we put some all around put the glass back in and let it set overnight, when I tested this morning it is still leaking. It looks like the water is seeping in between the seal and the glass. Could I have gotten a bad windshield seal or did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance, Chuck
on one that we put in that leaked, we found it to be leaking around the trim clips. put the sealer under each clip first then installed the windshield...no more leaks. we found the leak by running water over the top of the windshield while blowing compressed air into the seal from inside the car. it leaked at each clip.
Thanks Frank, I’m going to pull it tomorrow and check those areas, it’s suppose to rain today. thanks, Chuck
Hi Chuck. Not sure what you mean by 4" up the sides, as the entire pinch weld and rubber gets sealed all the way around. My choice has been the 3m 08509 bedding compound. It is pretty much like the old butyl sealer and stays flexible. Messy stuff for sure. When I do the whole outside bead I attach a piece of metal to the tip of the applicator tube. This helps lift the rubber away from the pinch weld so I can get the sealer way down into the joint. Also - did you put any sealer in the glass channel or leave that dry? Two ways to do this. Add a bead into the glass channel before putting the molding onto the glass or running a bead between the glass and the rubber after the glass is in. There are some good youtube videos from Mustang shops for this method. I like to add the sealer after the glass is in because I use lots of foamy glass cleaner to make it slippery when roping in the glass. Here is a good video set. Thanks Eric the videos were helpful. I was told not to put the bedding compound all the way around the channel and when I pulled the glass the bedding compound was only around the bottom and about 4" up the sides so that's how I put it back in (I did use the 3m 08509). There was a lot of non-hardening seam sealer in the channel that I thought was put there by the p/o instead of replacing the seal. Thanks, Chuck
Replacing a windshield and not leaking can be a real task, I have had 2 windshields in Mavericks replaced by pros and both leaked , you need an old timer to do it as the new generation o installers are use to the more modern type of windshield that does not have any trim . The last one I told them how to do it with making sure the trim clips had enough goop around them they ignored me and had to pull the trim back off and doing as I had suggested and then it worked . From what I have read about windshields being replaced in Mavericks there is about an 80% failure rate. It can be a messy job that is for sure
