Actually it was the 48,669th Kansas City built Ford vehicle assigned a serial number. Numbers assigned when dealer order is received, car built anywhere from 10 days to a month or more later. As far as Mavericks, could have easily been 48,600, 48,700 or any number 1200-1500 higher or lower. At one time KC built Falcon & Country Squire Sta Wgn, those VIN numbers were mixed among the early Mavericks. Falcon gone after '70, the the "woodie LTD"(you know ones with fake wood grain) were no doubt still being built.

Comets were built on same line as Maverick, probably 20-25,000 of those came down line before your Maverick. Comet VIN starts at 500,001. Mine wasn't built till June so lots o Mavericks rolled off line before it.

I didn’t know that. That’s pretty weird. Thank you

    Not really, simplified VIN assignment.

My Fairlanes were both built at Atlanta, VINs are approx 171,000 apart(one built Oct '68 other July '69). Because that plant also built full size, probably half of that number were Galaxies, LTD etc... Before switching to Maverick production in March '69, KC was building Fairlane/Torino.

I would say it is very unlikely that 19.1% of ALL 1972 Mavericks were made EXACTLY like this one. So many variables and options. How did you come to this conclusion?

According to Vin Decoder for Maverick/Comet, it could be wrong. Wouldn’t know specifically

Possibly 19.1% have same engine & transmission. When considering differences one must consider color, interior, plus other options such as A/C, P/S, radio, and probably 25-30 other possibilities. Varying these numbers can bring car into the possibility of being one of one. Marti is famed for such, though being one of one because your car had std hubcaps with whitewall tires and no radio is stretching it. Unless original or at least close, one of one is meaningless.

I've been thinking of getting a report for my Fairlane, interested in knowing how many Brittany Blue with Wimbleton White top base models were produced. On my Comet I could care less, originally bronze with tan interior, now Butterscotch with black.

Krazy, you are correct. My Comet is a 1 of 1 according to my Marti report (Copy in my Garage post). I figure my use of 1 of 34 is valid due to vinyl roof and bench seat combination.

    Hi Rick

I don't consider your Comet part of frivolous one of one category.

The handling package and wide oval tires were not common options, what makes it unique.

Tom, sorry for the misleading wording in my post. I never thought you were referring to my car.

Is there an archive or web site were a 'build sheet' for a Maverick or Comet could be found ? It tells date and sequence when the car was built.

There is a date on build sheet, BUT it's the date that was scheduled when assembly plant received order. More often than not, actual production varied by a few days to maybe weeks.

Only sequence number is rotation in upper left, that's the number in line on day of assembly.

I don't have build sheet for my Comet, by warranty card built June 23.

Back when Ford used a warranty plate riveted to door, date was stamped in that. Applies to 69½ Mav.

Fairlane has a build date of July 1st, Marti says June 26, rotation #843(Dayum ain't it time to go home?).

Cobra has build date on tag of Oct 3, just celebrated birthday #52. Ford 999 report says it was scheduled for the 4th but built 2nd, rotation #294. I've found that number grease penciled inside bottom of console.

A fellow Maverick owner puchased this 1975 Comet today for $200. Unfortunately its swiss cheese and will get parted out. R.I.P - VIN 5K31F539487
