Hi everyone, its been a minute. Earlier this week I was driving my car and my clutch decided to give up. Its a 1973 Mercury Comet Gt with a 200 straight six and a three speed on the floor. Its all stock except for a Hurst shifter that someone before me put on it. I've never taken this car apart like this and I do not know what size clutch it needs or anything. It also needs a flywheel as the one currently on it is warped so the car shakes to death when the clutch is let out. It might be possible for me to send the current flywheel off to a machine shop if its not too warped, but I won't know until I get it out so I would like to know where I could get another one if I need it. If anyone knows a good place to order a clutch kit and possibly a flywheel from and could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. (I've found some clutch kits for 250 straight six cars, but I do not know if these are the same as the 200). Thanks.

Rockauto is a great source for replacement parts. The flywheel more than likely can be resurfaced. The 200 bell housing is small, making it fairly easy to get to all of the bolts.

The 250 clutch and pressure plate is same as a V8...170/200 six is different. You can buy a clutch kit from Summit

I checked RockAuto and they don't carry any clutch kits for the 200 unless I missed it.

Thanks for the suggestion of Summit. The 200 clutches are few and far between on there, but I think I found one. Is it a 9 inch disk? Just want to be sure. The 250 and 302 ones are 10 inch disks I think.

Ha! I was looking under Comet and they didn't have squat... or I could've just missed something right in front of me. Wouldn't be the first time. I got one on Summit that I should be able to pick up tomorrow anyways though. It's a 9 inch disk, does that sound right? Its smaller than the 250/302 clutches (most of those were 10 inch), so I figured that was it.

There's no chance the 200 uses a 10". Over the years I've seen 9" & 9¼", going to be in that range.

... maybe grind the 10" down to 9"?

Seriously, with 200 - 170- and 144 small block six' , the original 'long frame' clutch can be substituted with the Diaphragm version used in later 200' Fairmont, Granola, etc.

The Diaphragm clutch gives higher clamping force with lighter pedal feel and less chatter tendency than 'long frame' . Clutch parts or a' kit' for Fairmont 200cid application will need to use the earlier TO bearing with earlier OEM 'long frame' bellhouse. The FW is specific to small block and is available from Pioneer through multiple vendors AFAIK..

Use '1978 Fairmont as application with box/intnet stores.

    Diaphragm PP on a 170cid T5 swap :

The 250 small block six FW is same dimensionally as 157t V8 small block FW with no external weighting and uses same clutch parts for small block V8 with 157t TO bellhouse except also needs TO bearing from push type linkage..
Any V8 'neutral balance' 157T or removable counterweight V8 FW should work with the 250 bellhouse.

With built 250's, a favorite is the Centerforce performance diaphragm clutch and SFI rated FW..

Wow, thanks for the info. I love the blown straight six, you don't see too many of those. Sadly, I am hopping on the bandwagon shortly and will be swapping in a 347 small block and a t-56. My main goal with this car is to compete in stick-shift drag racing classes in the future, so a decently powered small-block and a t-56 will be the starting platform and I will go from there. In the meantime, I just need a clutch to put back in this thing to keep it going until the engine is done. It won't get many miles on this clutch, I just don't want the car to sit around until then.

I got the car up in the air and found a new problem. The clutch linkage is pretty worn out. Since I only need it to last a little bit longer, I'm just looking for the basics that I can get. The most I could use is the clutch fork, equalizer bar and the bushing that goes on the equalizer bar. At the very least I need the bushing that goes on the equalizer bar. I've found a few around, but I'm not sure if it'll fit on this car. I'll put the links below. Keep in mind that its a 200 I-6 car.

Equalizer bar and TO fork may be hard to source, not many around other than maybe used ones on 'E-Pay'. The first link should fit almost any Ford EQ bar. the hat type bushings I believe go on the clutch/brake pedal shaft.

Maverick 170/200 EQ bar on left was cut down for wider 250 Mav' six block in narrower '61 Comet :

What about this bushing kit? Its half the price and says it fits 70-77 Maverick 6 cylinder. The kit says it "includes two felt washers, two nylon ball bushings, two clevis pins, and one metal washer." Is that the right type bushing? The pictures on this kit are terrible. If this isn't the correct one then I'll order the other one (first link in my other reply), I just thought almost $40 for a set of small bushings was pricy.
