Could be the timing cover, could be cracked or corroded. Had a similar issue with a 7.3 Powerstroke, thought it was a water pump but the timing cover was cracked. $4,500 repair bill because the cover was updated which required a new oil pan and the engine had to come out for that. Sure glad that was a company truck!

I think that's where the leak is. I have coolant resting on top of the cover and all hose connections are dry. I'm almost sure I'm going to pull cover and replace gaskets while I have everything loose. I was just viewing U-Tube vid on replacement... Hope can get car back off stands this week.

What about the Thermostat housing? I have had problems before with it leaking, finally got one with "O-ring" and that solved my problem........also makes changing thermostat a breeze!

Gave the car a coating of that ceramic stuff, easy to use and great shine, time will tell how long it lasts

Looks dry around housing! I thought that might be an issue, but, find no evidence of that. I'm going to inspect again; really don't feel like taking timing cover off if don't need too.. I really don't think t-housing.

I have the same problem... :yup:

Fifty years down road, aluminum timing covers are suffering leaks due to corrosion. Possibility porosity or sealing surface, new covers are fairly reasonable.

Hadn't even considered cover is possibly suffering from corrosion/porosity. Thanks for the suggestion. I don't want to do this just once, upon examination, will take a hard look at replacing cover.

I bought a new cover once. when I got home and took a good look at it , found it to be a POS. when I took it back and showed it to the guy I bought it from he gave me my money back and told me to just keep it.
after about 6 hrs. with files, grinder and glassbeading it was ready for Harold to do some milling on, then paint. it was for my new 347...

I always looked at that as the waterpump gasket on the front and timing chain gasket on the back...JMO
the cover on my 347 didn't have a waterpump gasket just the water port gaskets.

Well you're lookin' at it wrong.

Coolant must pass from water pump, through cover to to block. Can easily leak between block & timing cover.

Today I decided to go ahead and do complete cover gasket set since I have half stuff off I needed to do it. I was at parts store yesterday getting a bypass hose should have ordered Fel-Pro kit.then. Cleaned some parts, going to remove timing cover tommorrow after pulling balancer. Since I had a serious leak I couldn't pinpoint -- do it all-- hopefully do it once.

all the water goes to the outside of the cover, if it went through the cover it would be in the oil.
that's why they call it a timing chain cover and not a water pump cover.
the cover I had on my 347 had all the outside pump flange cut off and the water still went through the waterpump.

Today I scored another Mustang GT dual snorkel air cleaner, although it doesn’t have the correct cover it does have the plastic intake tubes that I was missing, & it was FREE :thumbs2:
