I am taking the Maverick to the track Sunday to run in the N4 class. https://www.islanddragway.com/2021/08/29/ol-daze-drags-9-12-21/ https://www.islanddragway.com/
I first ran the Maverick at Island Dragway in October 2008. With the old 302/C4 4:10 setup I ran a best of 15.8 @ 86.69 mph with a 2.307 60' time on Mickey Thompson I-Tread drag tires. After the metal/body work purgatory delay and new stroker 347 Eagle Crank/Rods, SRP 10:1 short block topped with Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum 60255 cylinder heads, an Edelbrock 2281 roller cam, 1.6 Comp cam roller rockers, with a Holley 650CFM carb, 3000 stall billet converter, solid input shaft AOD 4:10 setup and a new auburn posi in the 8' rear, I took it back to Island today and ran it in the N4 class. I needed a DOT approved helmet for the N4 class and my friend and fellow racer Richie Martins (78 Fairmont) lent me his motorcycle helmet. Thank you Richie. I got to Island at 8am, the gates didnt open until 8:30 but I was already parked a half mile back with a line of trailers and cars ahead. I talked with a couple of other drivers (Vega, Shoebox Nova) who were regulars and gave me a rundown on the days events and classes. With my new combo I hoped to be into the 12's on drag radials but for today I had BF Goodrich Radial T/A street tires. They advised driving around the water box and backing into it, which I did and the car hooked with a little tire spin off the line. The N4 class allowed for street car rules, DOT approved helmet, and my car passed its safety rules so I was allowed to run 14.0 seconds or slower. I was able to get two runs in for time trials. During the vehicle rebuild I put in line lock and I gave it some work today. I backed into the water box and lit them up thru first and second gear. I wasnt sure how fast the car was and I didnt want to break out so I eased into the throttle to a 2.078 60', a 9.8 1/8 mile @80.8 mph, I counted and lifted off the throttle about 100' from the lights and my first 1/4 mile run was a 14.39 at 84.32 mph My second run I again eased into the throttle to a 2.073 60' off a slow .97 reaction time, 8.616 1/8 mile @84.90 and it felt too fast so I again lifted 100' out from the lights to a 14.16 at 75.21 mph I went back to the pits for lunch and to let the engine cool off and replace the alternator belt that launched on the 1-2 6000 RPM shift. At 1 PM they started the elimination round. There were a total of 10 cars in the N4 field. I went up against a GTO with a 14.55 dial-in and I put a 14.2 on the glass with shoe polish. I thought all I have to do is beat him to the finish line. The plan was good til the GTO left on a .108 reaction time and I had to wait the .3 until my green light and I hit the gas too hard and it bogged off the line. Race was lost at the line with a miserable .81 reaction time but I was on the gas and chasing the GTO down. With the bog it ran a 2.153 60', a 8.612 1/8 mile @85.03 mph and I passed the GTO as the lights approached and then lifted realizing I was going to break out and the GTO (14.56 seconds) beat me by a fender. My final 1/4 mile run of the day was a 13.75 at 83.29 mph My best 1/8 mile ET was 8.6 seconds which converts to a 13.4 second 1/4 mile. That was with a part throttle launch on street tires. If I had drag radials and a harder launch coming up on the converter this car definitely has 12's in it. Thanks to all the friends/family who showed up at the track today to support me.
Here some pictures of the last race of the day. Count the Mavericks in the pictures above, I saw 5 plus mine.
From the staging lanes I watched them all go by at less than 5 mph. I could see some great burnouts and launches but couldn't see the timing boards.
Well with some seat time you could be well into the low 12s mid 11s , I know when I first took my car to the strip after putting all the go fast goodies on it I was really surprised when the first run was a low 12 . I did run slicks though. Our engine combos and build are very similar . Lots of fun on the street but had to change gears to be able to cruise in a comfortable rpm range Good job
Sounds like you got a solid 12 second engine / drivetrain combo going alright and it's in the right car to run just that in. Cool pictures and thanks for the run down. Sounds like it was a fun weekend.
Most of those other cars are in the NETO "North East Timing Organization" and one of them is their Nostalgia points leader ! https://www.netonostalgia.com/current-standings/
