I pulled the back glass from my 1974 maverick and found foam tape between the rubber and the headliner/body. I've done a few vintage Ford windows but never saw this. It appears to be original with carlite glass and very old rubber. There is virtually no rust on the pinch weld, so I would like to put it back in the same way. Not sure if the cheap Lowes stuff would work so I am looking for ideas where to get the right seal tape.
I don't think that is "foam tape". When I took the back glass out of my '74 this looked more like a strip of butyl tape. Whatever it is you do not want to use something that was designed for a house on a car. The acid in household silicone caulk will speed up the rust in metal after it eats off the paint. Here is what Home Depot silicone did in less than 10 years on my other project.
Your picture looks better than mine and it does look like sponge rubber tape. I agree, I don't want to use the Lowe's foam tape. The way that it was done on your car and mine is awesome. If your car is as clean as mine on the inside " no rust around the pinch weld" then I would love to find the original product. No mess! I am attaching the original shop drawing that shows it as seal tape. I will probably try to use this on the windshield as well, although the shop drawing does not show it on the windshield.
I can think of two reason why Ford didn't use Tape Seal on front windshield... 1.) Being cheap 2.) Front windshield moves around a small amount bumping down the road, reason why you use gooey butyl instead of the stiff urethane to keep the glass from cracking.
Yes, there was foam tape from the factory. When I have reinstalled back glass, I did not use any foam tape at all. Just used butyl to seal the rubber to the car.
