Hey guys, I am in the process of disassembling my 74 Maverick. I have almost everything ready for media blasting, but still have the doors to go. In particular the glass and regulator. I can just start unbolting stuff and hope for the best, but would appreciate some guidance. I have searched for this info but can't find it for mavericks.
The regulators are easy to unbolt and get out of there, so they don't get filled with blast media - but you need to pull the glass first. The glass is held in with 2 small plastic retainers - to release them just push out the center of them and then it will pop out of the glass. They are easy to see once the door panel is off. The retainers look like this ------------- Once out, the glass is released and can be pulled out through the top without removing the beltline "fuzzies".
I see the quarter windows are in there too yet. To get those out, carefully pry up the cover over the mounting screws at the latch - the cover can be saved to put back in place for assembly. Remove the screws under that cover and swing the window way open - it will reveal the screws at the hinge - take those out or loosen up as needed and the whole window comes out in 1 piece.
Wow, I sure am glad I asked. I don't think I would have found those without breaking something. Will try that once back in the shop, and report back. I already removed the quarter windows, and all else. Got about 4 days in the tear down excluding all dash stuff, which I did a month ago. Getting the door panel clips out without damaging the panel is brutal. I read a tip somewhere once to use a bottle opener to remove the drip rail molding, and it really makes this a simple task. Not to stray from the original post, but will try to post picture of the one I use.
If your drip rail trim is still on and not damaged, I would advise strongly to leave it on the car and just tape it off. The only reason (in my book) to take it off is if the rail is rusted or damaged and needs repair. Getting it off without some damage can be really tough. And once painted getting it back on the now thicker rail is tough too. I have done it both ways and would now always leave it on if I could. Same thing for the stainless on the doors window frame. If that part of the car doesn't need repair - leave it on and tape it off
Thanks for the advice on the door trim. I have not removed it yet so I will leave it. The drip rail trim popped right off with the tool. e tool.
Glad it came off easy. I've had parts cars that I stripped that came off easy and others were like welded on.
