Hi guys I have a question about the 6201 MSD box as a replacement for the 6200. I currently have a 6200 on my 1971 Mav Grabber w/302 that I purchased back in 1985, recently I have been restoring the Beast because she sat for 18yrs. After replacing all the vital parts that rotted of froze up it was time to fire her. Well no spark so I traced the problem to a dead MSD box, power going in but no power going out. I talked to Summit and they said the replacement was the 6201, but I must say the tech didn't seemed too sure, also he recommend the #8897 harness, yeah harnesses are separate now $$. If anybody has info on this topic I would greatly appreciate it.

The only reason to even run one of those fancy boxes is for the rev limiter. If you don't feel the need for that I'd just run a stand alone distributor. Iv ran both with a weekly bracket car and it didn't make any difference in e.t.

Thanks for the reply, I don't totally agree with this comment. As for my situation the MSD has made a difference in MPG as well as horse power, my engine ran better, stronger with quicker throttle response, only draw back is the plugs wear faster.

I sold off the MSD and replaced it with a Pro Comp because I needed a rev limiter. Not sure if they still sell them though. If you don't need the mega spark of the 6201, the 5520 looks good as a substitute:

Ck the vid and you will see MSD now has rev limiter boxes, It's all about choice I guess.

I purchased the Pro Comp just because it was cheaper at the time than an MSD with rev. limiter.

Not sure what direction you want to go, but there are several manufacturers that make multi spark CDI boxes. If you want to eliminate the box, you could go to any of the "ready to run" distributors or some type of HEI (Chevvy type with built in coil).

Yes, it's mostly about choice. As far at the harnesses go, I just added in extra wire for the power line so no extra harnesses were needed in my application.

I have ben running the MSD RTR (ready to run) billet distributor for several years and love them. They can run with or without the MSD box and they have a built in rev limiter. But the price has sky rocked lately. I bought one for a 302 about 4 yeas ago for a little under $300 now they are over $500.

Thanks for the info guys, I went with the MSD 6201 6A for about 277.00 to replace the old 6200 I installed in 1985. I did replace the distributor with a RTR but I did run it through the MSD box using the white wire set up not the mag pick up set up Still replacing parts, tried to start her but the wires are gone as well as the plugs, wont hold an idle.
