OK Guys, Is there some special trick to get the parking brake cable out ot the back of the backing plate on the rear end, or was I just not holding my mouth right? The rear has been sitting outside for a while, so they may be rusted somewhat. I can get them to rotate now, but I cannot get them to release and come through the hole in the backing plate. I am switching from a 4-lug rear to a 5-lug. The cables that I need to remove are the ones on the 5-lug, which is out of the car right now. I am redoing all of the brakes in an attempt to get the car on the road/strip shortly. Also, are the parking brake cables the same on the 4-lug as the 5-lug? I'm hoping that if I can ever figure out how to get the cable out, that I can just reuse the existing cables that are on the car now. I searched the archives and was not able to come up with anything tangible, so any assistance would be appreciated. Later,
You have to be able to get the little "tangs" pushed in.......all at the same time......in order to pull it through the hole. Try a small fuel line clamp...the kind you can tighten with a screwdriver.......to squeeze the tangs in while you pull it out. I would think you should be able to reuse the cables.
I just replaced my 7.5 with 8" and changed 4 or 5 lug and the lines are pretty much same size from what I can tell. I had them next toeach other and they looked the same.
soak it with some lubricant, walk away and drink your favorite beverage or two. Then push and pull. Dan

Thanks guys...yep, I tried the drinking approach...it didn't seem to help, but on the bright side, I no longer cared about not being able to get them out! And for the record, I was able to come up with a lot more than 2 or 3 new names for them... I just left them alone, because I was contemplating firing up the torch. I really hate to lose.... I didn't get a chance to mess with them today, but I may attempt it again tomorrow. Probably get my dad to come over and help me...if I can hold all of the "tangs" in, I'm sure he can pull the cable out. I'd ask my wife, but she refuses to help me with anything automotive related anymore. There was an ugly "pulling a car with a chain" incident several years ago that she has never forgiven me for. Come to think of it, if I'm not mistaken, I used some of the same words to describe that situation as I did when "discussing" the tangs. Thanks for the advice, Later
Well tangs for the misery,lol...add some lube, I used a pair of channel locks on mine once just a little pressure on one side then the other will some firm pressure on the cable, and yes I said a few words over the job too and emptied a few cans of milwalkies finest...Jim
Craigs method works good. Just put hose clamps around tangs just tight enough to let them slip thru hole ,use some spray lube to help them out. Same basic idea as a ring compresser.
