lemme get "da book" ....... sum-g9031 (said maverick) ive got 302/c4 in 71 2dr fit great. had to lift BOTH sides of motor, tie speedo cable out of way, other MINOR stuff. love em did have ALOT of trouble with one header to head bolt (just put bolt in befor bring header close to motor.)

no clue if they'd work on m/t wouldn't want to try it due to equilizer. very slight interference with "that dilly that comes off steering box" on extrem turn to one side (like i need to turn that sharp) (fixed it's self after a day or two). imo buy header wrap for first 6-8" of each primary and fiberglass boot protectors (8). SHORTY HEADER PLUGS BOSCH OR ACCEL.

i'm running b&m hammer. oem was 3spd man on tree. removed ALL of shift rods/clutch links only thing left is the two little flanges (on steering shaft next to firewall) that rods hooked to. tied up to firewall right next to master cyl.

I CAN'T BELIEVE NOONE ELSE GOT SUMMIT HEADERS TO WORK. MAYBE MY CAR LOVES ME

And this happened with excessive turns to dent the headers? How did it "fix itself"?

No offense meant. My point is "if it works, share the knowledge, so the rest of us can benefit" What is the method to your madness, er, breaking in process? And price?

I am all for cheap and effective, even if it takes a BFH to make it work.

    Again, again, since nobody responded:

Between the Hookers and the Hedmans, which ones are easiest to install and is there any difference in performance. I tend to like the look of the Hookers, plus I always wanted a Hooker Headers sticker on my car. I am willing to pay the extra $10 for them, unless the Hedman are easier to install.

I'm pretty sure mine are Summit headers, but they were already broke in (dented) before I got them. There's a small (1/8 - 1/4") ding in one or two primaries on the drivers side from the pitman arm, but not bad. Getting the bolts in, now that sucked. They're tight behind the primary tubes, had to get different header bolts with smaller hex heads so I could get a wrench on them at all.

Just put the AOD in my maverick today:hmmm: . WOW what a tight fit!!! on a future note for anyone planning on this, on the drivers side of the bell housing, at the bottom bell housing bolt there is a flange that protrudes out from the bell about 1/2". I had to cut it off and massage my headers (BFH) to get them in..Still dont know if they are gonna work because the collectors are aiming right at the middle of the trans!! gonna be close I will snap some pics and post them asap...by the way, this trans had a kickdown rod and not a cable anyone else seen this?

i went with the hooker headers because i felt they were better. (Just alittle instinct) the headers fit great. Except for the clutch linkage. Took 45 minutes to install the engine and 2 hours to put in the clutch linkage. But you dont have to worry about that.

Maybe the reason nobody is responding is that when you get one type of header that works, there is no reason to try another.

    And both of em work.

I used hedman 88300 long tube headers on the 302 maverick (when it had the 302). Fit great. It was manual steering and floor shift auto, though....if that makes a difference. I also used 88400 shorties, just bolted them to the heads to see what how they would fit the way they were intended to work. The driver's side would have to be modified, as the collector is pointed straight at the firewall. I ended up using them for turbo headers.

Am I really that cheap! I use Black Jack headers and I too experienced all the problems mentioned. If my memory serves me well I think I paid around $100
for them. I later took them back out to wrap them and had the collector flanges cut off and just had the pipe welded so there is no gasket to worry about. If you plan on anything, plan on wraping them, underhood temp is improved alot! This is how I actually felt before wraping them, , LOL.
And as to them pointing towards the trans or off line (straight back), mine turned out ok.(both times, ugh).

What exactly is the top bracket mentioned for power steering. I'm converting my 6 cyl 71 Comet, auto column,. to manual 4 speed 302 and of course I'll be looking for headers that will fit best. Between the power steering, clutch linkage and steering column, it looks like it may be a tough install. Will the shift levers on the steering column have to be removed?

I wrapped a mine at one time, really does make a huge difference in the engine bay heat department. they are a little stinky until the new burns off and I little teadious work wrapping them, but well worth it (y)
