My 73 is beyond repair(body rust) and I'm thinking about entering it in a small car demo derby. Class rules are 2600 lbs with driver. I'm 220, so do you think I can get the Mav down to less than 2400lbs with no glass(except windshield) no interior(except front bench seat) 250 c4? I'm thinking about removing any good pieces and scraping the rest after the derby. But I'm not sure of current weight and how much weight I would save by removing the glass. Thanks
my '75 4dr weighted 3350 with me in it(180 lbs at that time)302,c4,no P/S or A/C .Of course it had the crash bumpers, but you'll still probably have to shed 600-700 lbs.
Tim that's what I was worried about, I hate to take the time to strip it all down and have it over weight. I'm NOT gonna run in a large car derby. talk about suicide
Bite me NJ boy (and you know what the J stands for) Ya Steve sitting in a very damp garage before I got it really took its toll. I started to get replacement panels for it, but I just can't keep up with the rust. Too many irons in the fire to restore 2 cars, and keep a roof over my head.
well good luck with that..... as much as i'm against destroying a maverick, in your case maybe it could be fun... i'd like to have a heads up to see what the maverick would look like if i was hit simultaneously by 4 cars in a dirt road. I'd like to know I can walk away....lol... If the car is too much and you dont think you could get it down in weight, you could always give the car away to someone on the board that might be in more of a financial build to fix it up right... thats not me of course....lol.. good luck though
weight I would bet that you could get it down there if put on heavy diet. After taking out the heat/AC system, my 72 Comet 2 door weighs 2760 lbs. That is with a 351 with an aluminum intake. Full interior, spare tire, etc. If you have a scrap metal dealer near you, that is an easy way to weigh the car. You roll up on their scale, dump your scrap, and then get weighed again. They give you the difference in weight. It would be a good way to baseline the car. Then as you remove parts, you can weigh them at home on a scale and keep track off the total. Some ideas beyond stripping the interior down to nothing ... Remove the sway bar, If it has PS, you can remove the pump and the ram on the center link, there will be some slop in the steering that can be reduced with a stack of washers in the PS valve at the end of the link. I think 73 front bumpers have shock absorbers built in. If so, you might be able to make a lighter alternative. With any luck, the rust has given you a 50 lb headstart.
