I have a 72 Maverick column shift and their is no switch on the tranny. After searching many posts, I assume it is on the column down low. How many wires are involved and is it possible just to disconnect these and bypass the switch?

Not true, its at the base of the column on the top IIRC, near the firewall. The 69 1/2s i'm not sure about though.

I am trying to track down an ignition problem. I cannot get any juice to the starter so I am eliminating as many sources as possible. On the early Falcons, you could just unplug the two wires going in and connect them bypassing the switch. I thought that might still apply on the Maverick. In previous threads, I stated that someone butchered the wiring on this car due to a stereo install. I cleaned up most of the mess but there are still a few lingering issues. The car actually started before I disconnected the stereo. Now it will not get juice to the relay. There are what look like factory wires that are white/brown hanging from the dash and were spliced into something going to the stereo. As of right now, those wires are not connected. I am getting power to all lights, accessories but no go on the starter relay, I still need to print out the .pdf wiring diagram for this beast but will have to wait due to a key file missing on my system. Any suggestions would be helpful. I just want to get it running again so I can do additional work to make it roadworthy. I need to get the tranny and cooling system flushed.

You can bypass the switch. It's been a while but I have done it before. If I remember correctly there is a square 4 wire plug out on the firewall close to the rear of the shock tower brace. You should be able to tell if it's right simply because it should run down to the nuetral safety switch on the tranny. I don't remember which wires to jump but it should be easy especially if you have a test light. One wire should get hot when you go to start and just jump the others till you find the right one. Remember, it's been a long time since I did this so I could be wrong. If so, get under the car and run the wire from the bottom up to your connecter. Also remember, the car will start in any gear if you bypass it so be very careful.

4 wires sounds right, I think 2 are for the safety switch and 2 for the reverse lights. Couldn't tell you which is which

You can install a tranny mounted switch so that you can't accidentally start it in gear and have a collision.
