I hate my wifes van 2005 grand caravan. Now I do all the minor maintenance oil changes filter changes and such. Now last august I changed the oil and filled it to spech. checked for leaks nothing all good. Mind you she only puts 6-8000 miles a year on this thing running to the store and school for the kids. She tells me she got an oil light the other day so I check it and it does not even come up on the stick add three quarts to get it to the min. level on the stick the inside of the tailpipe is black and looks like soot. confused right now about why this new van is burning oil.. No leaks on the driveway she parks it in the same spot every day. It must be burning it....I want to shoot this thing right now tried to trade it in but ford discontinued the van line...

Going with what RadMav says, also cant go with mileage on oil changes, At least every 6 months if not sooner. Change the oil an give it a good running for a hour, then keep your eye on it

I agree... it is very hard on an engine to just make a bunch of slow driving short trips, barely getting up to temp each time. If this is how it is always driven, then you should take it out on the interstate at least once or twice a month and give it a good hard run. I'll bet it's full of carbon deposits. You need to change the oil more often then normal if that's how it's driven, too. That type of driving promotes moisture and sludge build up in the engine. Stuff like this is why you see people advertise a used car as having mostly "highway miles". Around town driving is hard on a vehicle if that's ALL it EVER does.

Yep. Probably what happened has to do with the condesation that builds up when an engine does'nt get warm. It will start displacing all the oil, which the engine just burns up, and then the first time it gets warm, it evaporates and you are suddenly low. I've never heard of 3 quarts before, though, thats alot.
