Well...I have been investing money in my maverick all winter. I built up the 302 to a 347, heads, cam, intake n carb, and built my transmition, 8.8 with spool. I been planning on using the bottle all this year.

This is my 3rd weekend running the car at our new track. the maverick pulls mid 12's consistently all motor. and i ran 1 time down the track with a small shot and it ran like a top, not a hitch, no hikups, backfires.. second run i do the same thing just as before... 1/2 way down the track...BOOM...rod thru the block.

Eddie, I'm going to remind you of this post when, and we all know if you play it will happen, this nightmare happens to you.

awannabegrabber, man I can't tell you how :sorry: I am to hear what happened. I personally know I can blow them up fast enough without the spray, that's why I keep telling myself it's only a number and I hate the thought of wearing a fire suit anyway.

I know I'm not the only one on the board that preaches about building a bottem end twice as strong as you need it to be.

I would rather cut a corner somewhere else, then in the short block.

Good luck on your next build.

    As always just my .02

Man, I know that feeling all too well! Not that it's any better, of course. The only thing worse than blowing up an engine is blowing up a NEW engine--especially one like you have that only has a few passes on it. What caused the rod to fail? Bolts or ??. An engine builder will build a new one a little tougher. A GOOD engine builder will find out WHY it happened in the first place and use that knowledge for future reference on what not to do.

What are you shooting for? 10's? 9's? 10's are easy if you have a dedicated drag car. Hell if I can get our POS Rust-stang into the 10's with leftover, 4th hand parts, anyone can do it. And that's ALL motor and not a single power adder.

I am really curious as to what caused the rod to fail, if in fact it was the rod itself. Unfortunately, lots of times it's hard to made a sure diagnosis on a failed engine because so much of the rest of the bottom end and block is damaged during the failure. One of the training classes I took not long ago was an entire day's worth of failure analsys. Lots of great information there. And lots of hands-on stuff, dealing with actual blown up engines. Not to mention all of the busted stuff we have around here lately.

VERY curious as to what happened inside there....

Well. The Number 6 rod broke, the timming chain skipped acouple of teeth, bent some valves.

I plan on goin to a 351w and same amount of spray. I am hoping for mid 10's.

Sounds like you need a little more fuel with your nitrous.......
    Too bad about the failure.
