I say 9 chances out of 10 if Ford kept the name it would evolved into the present day Focus. I aways saw the evolution as follows but replace the name plate with Maverick: Fairmont, Tempo, Contour, Focus. It is sad to think that but that is my conclusion. I believe the name will only survive in our cars here int the US.
Technically: Falcon->Maverick->Fairmont->Tempo->contour->?fusion? Pinto->escort->Focus Although the 4 door focus covers part of the gap left by not having anything in the 'falcon' class these days. Most of the gap is probably covered by the fusion, which has a 107in wheelbase.
I think it’s safe to say that Ford canceled the Maverick due to competing sales with the mustang. With this in mind I find it a bit ironic that it was killed because of its success. I have to agree with the last 3 posts mainly because I don’t think a 4-door mustang would have been a viable option, and would have done more harm than good. Still I would love to see a limited ed. Maverick ed. Mustang. When you think about it, it could have been the package that Ford used for the upcoming hybrid version of the mustang, which would have kept with the “Family Friendly” concept that was originally pushed by the Maverick.
The maverick was canceled in 1977 because it was supposed to have been canceled in 1975 (replaced by the Granada) but lived on because of strong sales. The issue of mustang sales was solved by denying mavericks disc brakes (until its final years), 4 speed manual transmission, a tach, dual exhaust, and probably a few other things I've forgotten. In foreign markets like Brazil and mexico where the mustang was not sold there was no issue offering these items on mavericks.
Wouldnt sell. Even the Challenger is a tough sell. Ares are collecting dust for the most part. Average people dont know what a Challenger is let alone a Maverick. The Mustang on the other hand sells with a retro look cause everyone knows Mustang. Would be cool but the big 3 need to sell cars. Besides who wants a Maverick loaded with electronics that you cant fix at home.
I dont like seeing my beautiful car with a Tempo front end IMO the squareness of the front end doesnt go well with the rounded lines of the body
Looks like a European Escort threw up on a Maverick. Definitely looks like an 80's car. Thank god the 80's are over.
Cant really say if that is ugly or not. It is definitely the 80's styling and it is not any worse than the toyota chevy nova LOL
This is what it would have looked in the early 90s. It seemed that all the cars looked the same just with different names.
