did they make Factory purple Comets. the stripe isn't factory but the purple looks faded to about the right tone after all these years
I don't think so. Here are color options for '71 Mercurys: http://www.mercurystuff.com/1971_mercury_colors.php Similar colors up to '73, assuming that the small bumper is original. Open the door and get the color code.
I would say its very possible looks like factory paint to me and probably special order. So it wouldnt be on the color code chart.
It could have been a special promotional car or a new color for next years model that was tried and they changed there mind. Is there purple paint under the carpet, engine compartment?
Depends on how long it has been outside. Sure the paint is faded but the cars are 38 years old now! Paint can get that way after 10 years in the sun if all it does is sit and bake. Because of the non-factory stripes I think it's highly likely what you are seeing is a late 1970s / early 1980s re-spray and color change. Easy way to tell is check under the hood, trunk, door jambs, etc Or of course if you can get the color code then you can see for sure.
i have a factory purple maverick so i could very well be a factory painted comet but mine was a special order.they could have added the stripe later.
I have bought and sold a few cars and sometimes the pictures are decieving as well, depending on light example. I went to look at a 99 z71 looked maroon and when I got there it was fire engine red
If it's a factory purple small bumper tray dash comet without too much rust, I'd be interested in it if it's for sale. -Scott H.
The way the paint is baked off of it around the driver's window, and the ridge in the hood, it looks like white paint under there to me. If that was the original primer that we are looking at, in a humid climate like the northwest where that car is at, wouldn't that all be rust? Most light grey primers trap water and make the metal rust.
I would be disappointed if that car isn't factory purple, yet amazed that being 37+ years old, it could have never been repainted to any color under the rainbow.
