Using flat carpet, how do you make it lay down without bunches and gathers?

Is there a special kind of carpet to buy, or is there a secret to laying it flat?

i have that one in my carpet and unless you gonna glue it down it doesn't stay in place well at all. and that's a lotta money that I wish i didn't pay. i'm sure i could have found some scrap and made something just as nice for about the same if not a lot less money

Yeah, that does seem like a lot of money for what it is. I'd head out to a fabric store.

Actually, what I think would be completely awesome as a trunk pad is this stuff. I know a guy who set up a pretty serious home gym/weight room, and he had the whole floor covered in thick black rubber pad. I asked him about it, and he said it's for horse stalls, and it's cheap. That stuff has some substance to it, would stand up to some abuse, (just pull it out, hose it off, and it looks brand new again) and I think it would stay where you put it. His mats were 3/4", probably overkill, but I see in the link I found above, you can get it in 1/4" which sounds about ideal to me.

I made one for mine a few years ago. I bought an inexpensive roll of automotive carpet from Advance auto parts or Walmart. Cut it out and put two cuts in the upper two corners, lays flat, doesn't move around.

Heat gun. Just don't catch it on fire or melt it. Helps a ton.
