OK, got a chance to try out my new Hobart Handler 125 with 75/25 gas today. There were times when I got a really good buzz going and it welded fantastically :yahoo: but then there were times when it would sound more like popcorn, and popped and spit a bit.

I was welding holes in my trunk, so I couldn't keep on it for too long, and had to hit it for a second or 2, then hit the other side of the hole.

Anyway, it was the short bursts that were popping, and when I did a longer bead, it started to buzz and laid down a nice bead.

Do I need to increase my feed rate, or what, to get that buzz and less pop?

Also, I have the gas coming out at 20 psi. Is that plenty? That is 20 psi with the trigger pulled, and about 23 psi at rest.

20 Psi is fine. Is the metal you are welding clean??? Short burst welds tend to crackle and pop so no biggie there either. If your not blowing through, your wire feed speed is good. Its possible your heat (amps) are too low. Turn it up a click and see if the popping stops.

OK, I had it at the lowest setting, since I am welding the sheetmetal in the trunk.

It was clean, freshly sanded before I started.

I have only used a gas MIG once before when Rolandag2 loaned me his to do a bunch of trim holes in my fenders and door. That was a couple years ago. So basically, I am learning over again.

I gave my harbor freight flux-core welder to my neighbor and told him "enjoy!"

Try turning up the wire speed a little.

Mess around with the wire pressure and spool stop too. Get the spool as loose as possible without it completely unraveling. That will help.

Also, hold the heat on just a bit longer if it is popping and spitting. It should clean up and leave a nice pool/puddle without burning through.
