I have an early c4 with a green dot cruise0matic valve body, 1000 miles on a new rebuild. The trans worked fine when suddenly, it stayed in 3rd and wont downshift. Reverse and park are fine, but if I put it in low, it revs like it's in neutral. Any ideas?

How do you know its stuck in third?

Can you take off in second?

It seems to me he burnt out the band and just thinks its stuck in third gear.

    But I could be wrong

I don't have enough information - Does the transmission start in 3rd? Is there any manual first or second? If you put the transmission in manual first does it rev high or lock up? Have you done any other work on the transmission recently.

The car leaves in 3rd, and stays in third. I haven't even raced it yet, but the motor and trans have about 1000 miles in them. Ace Motors in L.A. built them both. If I pull the shifter into low 1st, it revs, but does not move. If I put the shifter in D1 or D2, (green dot valve body) it leaves and stays in 3rd. It was working fine until I stopped at a stop sign. I pulled away and the car never dropped down to 1st, it just stayed in 3rd. It goes fine in reverse, and never slipped. Any ideas? This is why I love the Mavericks that my daughters have. The 6 cylinder engines don't make enough power to hurt metal parts! ;)

It sounds like your governor is stuck. You can access it by removing the extension housing (tailshaft housing) with the transmission in the car.
Have a big drain pan ready because it will lose some fluid. You will also need a new gasket for the extension housing so have one on hand before you start.

Ah ha. I knew you'd have an idea. Got an awful lesson on sticky governors in trade school. I wont post how the teacher got it free'd up. Scared the crap out of me and I have never tried it.:(

I was checking out the trans and found one of the band adjustment screws had loosened itself out about an inch. The lock nut was still on, but also out an inch. Could that be it?

In low gear you don't need any bands, in second gear you use the front band, Reverse uses the rear band. It has got to be the governor.

I found the loosened band bolt and lock nut while pulling the trans. I set the band back again, then put everything back together. The trans works fine again. Thanks for the input guys. I missed a simple screw-up.

Glad it's going for you again.

Make sure it's adjusted properly or you'll have more trouble
