exhaust cutoffs

    tommorow my exhaust cutoffs come in and i need some instalation info.

    i read in a previous post if you have straight pipe it will slowly warp engine components from the rapid cooling. i need to know where i need to install my cutoffs where this would not happen, but when i was younger i drove the car with the exhaust cutoff at the y-pipe for about a year (i was 16yo at the time:huh:) but the car is fine no problems with pistons or rods

    any info would help thanks

    and no i dont plan to drive the car like i did when i was 16 :oops:......................just at car shows

    which ones did you get? i hope you didn't get the cast mr gasket ones, i got one and its junk.

    as for placement what you want to do is use a crayon and draw a line down the pipe, where it stops melting is the optimal placement. (y)

    i summit brand manual cutoffs, and yes ive heard the mr.gasket ones were crap :p, but im not sure im gonna try the crayon trick because the whole pipe gets hot, ive accidentally touched the dang thing to may times lol

    I read it in a issue of popular hot rodding, when they were installing cut outs.

    Running the engine at peak torque will cause the pipe to blue from the heat. The proper method to find the length is to run the engine under a load at or above the peak torque of the engine. Where the discoloration of the pipe ends is the length you need for the engine to develope its power best.
    A crayon will melt at the tailpipe...

    Guys that run open headers must be in real trouble...

    Just put 'em where they are easiest to install. You'll never notice the difference. The crayon, temperature pencil, thermometer, blueing tricks have been proven to not be accurate. Sometimes you end up at correct spot, often you don't. The only way to know the optimum location is trial and error testing or a software program like PipeMax. I'm betting you mostly wanna make noise. It's not worth worrying about.

    Agreed. And the noise is cool.. but gets tireing. I had them before and it was fun to pull the cables when I was next to old people or loud untasteful music. I just blended it out lol. The old people were funny to watch as they would look around as if they were lost. Hope it don't happen to me lol. Keeping them from leaking and staying shut was a pain.

    it stopped melting right under the front seats.

    Mine melted where I put the cutouts :rofl2:. I used a tire marker crayon.

    Dang I've been running wide open cutouts for about 2-3 years now with no problems... I guess when I pull the heads we'll see the verdict.. :yikes:
