Im about to order some gears and a locker but dont know gears to get. I was thinking 3.55 or a 3.80 gear. The specs on the engine are edelbrock rpm air gap, b303 cam, e7 heads. It also has a 2800 stall converter, and the tires are 245/60/15
what trans do you have do you drive on the freeway are you going to be racing it if so is it a 1/4 track or a 8'th mile track
I have a c4, I wont be taking the car on the highway that much. the track i will be running at is a 1/4 mile
3.80 should be a nice all round gear if you dont plan on hwy much. I run a 4:11 locker and its a blast but not so good on the hwy to work. Turns around 3300 at 60. The engine is pretty happy at that rpm though and is surprisingly fuel efficient. Its happier than me, it gets pretty loud. IF I had my choice it would be 3.55 with a 5 speed and 9 inch.
Thanks but do you think I have enough engine to not top out way before the end of the 1/4 with the 3.80 gear
Enough guys on here racing I'm sure someone can answer from experience with the 3.80 and 3.55 set ups. You need an idea of what the rpm will be across the finish line. I would think the 3.80 would be fine but lets see what the guys have to say.
3.80 will get you to the end of a 1/4. you have a pretty short rear tire. i was thinking that 3.55s would be beter for you.
Im about to order the locker but would like to know which is the better of these two http://www.summitracing.com/parts/STR-R542059/ http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWT-92-0680-2800/
the first one is a limited slip not a locker. that makes the second one the beter locker. the lsd will give you alot quieter smoother operiation. i would recomend the lsd (limited slip differental).
I have had good success with the Powertrax system in my car. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWT-92-0690-2800/ Also, running 4.11 with 28" tire and cross the line at 6800-7100 rpms
If you are not going on the highway much and are going to the strip I'd definitely go with the 3.80 gear.
Will the lsd give the same amount of traction as the locker? Im not really concerned about noise mainly because i cant hear anything over the engine, just mostly what will give me most traction while still being able to turn
if your staying with the a 8", the lsd will work really well. if you were going off road or really high power drag racing then the locker would be beter. the will always give you power to both tires as long as its not broken. the lsd need a large difference it traction on the wheels before it will let one side loose. the locker can make pops and bangs, also you will have to correct in turns when you apply power and it locks the axles it will try to push you streight.
