My boyfriend recently left for BCT in the National Guard. Behind, he left his 1974 Mercury Comet. Ive been wanting to try and get it running before he comes back, but i havent had much practice in that field. To get the right start; his car has been completely drained of all the oil in it. What type of oil is needed for it? Also, where would the best place be to look for a battery for it Thanks to all who helps.
Welcome! What part of WVA are you from? A real nice thing you doing there! Does he have any buddies that helped him with his car? May be a good idea to check that way and they may know if he only used certain oil or filters. If not,,, snoop! Look in trunk, garage or tool bin an see if you can find any oil or filters, look in glove box for receipts from store for car stuff. May have some members close and may get help that way. Oil and filters are plenty out there, Just trying to stay with his program on this. If you can't find out what he used, give a holler Again, Welcome from Pittsburgh Pa! A Big salute goes to boyfriend an you on serving our USA!!!
I like the snooping idea. Maybe you'll find other info like battery receipt or something..maybe a secret phone # lol j/k!. A battery can be found at Wal Mart or Auto Zone, OReiley etc... They will want to know some vehicle info like year and engine size perhaps. Be sure to pay attention to the + and - on the battery and get the cables back as they were.
Thats for the welcomes. Im from the boone county, wv area. Well, i wen snoopin in his car and had zero luck find anything :/. And, i only get to talk to him through letters; and those take forever for replies. Anyone have an more ideas?
Welcome to the Board from Northeastern Illinois. I wud go to one of the auto stores in ur area whether it be one of the Big Box stores or independents, tell them what u have and get a price on all the things u mentioned. If ur so inclined - compare prices. I wud most likely buy it all from the one w/ the best price for reasonable quality parts - not the cheapest. Next u will need some tools if u don't have them - U can't do anything w/o some tools. If u can find someone in ur area w/ some car/mechanical skills it wud serve u well since it sounds as though ur skills are vry limited. Getting or keeping these old cars running can be a challenge to say the least. Gud luck w/ the project....
Since no one specifically answered your question I'd say to go with any good 10-40 multigrade oil-not synthetic. Also the engine uses a Fram PH8A oil filter. There are other brands available also, but Fram is a common brand. If you have a battery in the car I would remove it and take it in since there will be a core charge anyway. If not, just ask at the store for the right battery. They have a list of cars and the batteries they use. Good luck.
Welcome If it is a 302 v8 you can run 10w-30 in it, the oil filter would be a motorcraft fl-1a or if you buy a fram it would be a ph-1a,tg,xg etc etc. The battery should be under tha hood but not always mine is in the trunk so like the one guy said snoop around. Also you can use the vehicle identification number to help with what motor is in the vehicle. Welcome to the club good luck
