When I went to get the title work done, and buy my license plate for my '73 Maverick the total cme up to $163.oo. I pulled my wallet out, and it dawned on me that the figure was very high. I asked the lady why it was so high, that I was'nt used to paying so much for an old vehicle like that. She said $6.oo notary fee, $28.oo for the plate, $40.oo for the title work and $90.oo for the sales tax. Sales tax in North Carolina is 3% of the tax value of the vehicle, so that puts your car valued at $3000.oo dollars, she said. I just kinda laughed and said well I got a good deal on my Maverick, seeing I only gave $1000.oo for it.:biglaugh::bs: After a vehicle reaches a certain age in N.C., the state just goes off their calculated sales tax, instead of an actual bill of sale. I just licensed my '94 f-150 Lightning, and the sales tax was only $36.oo on it, which puts its tax value at only $1200.oo :hmmm:

They tried to tell my dad his old 77 Nova 4 dr (6 cyl 3 on the tree) was a collectors car and the value was based off of a Camaro and they hit it at $6000. He raised cane and they dropped the value to $1200...which is still too much.

Well it's a priceless piece of automotive history to the tax man, but it's just an old piece of junk to the insurance adjuster...

Yes, I will ! Oh man, I just looked at your avatar, and it shows that you live in Arizona. That would be too far for you to come get it, and delivery fees would be too high to be a good deal for you.:rofl2:

I know exactly what you're talking about I told the lady," This aint no Mustang". Since when did Mavericks become collectors items?
I'm going to insure mine with my insurance company ( Farm Bureau). They have a type of coverage to where you just give them copies of the receipts, and if the unquestionable happens, you'll get payed what you have in it back. I guess that's not too bad for daily driver coverage.

I have heard talk of GA wanting to charge yearly Ad Valorum on collector value instead of book value on antique cars. Hope it never happens. After a car is 10 years old it is currently a flat $20.

The DMV here tried that to me years ago and when she told me how much they thought it was worth my reply was, "Sold, where do I pick up my check". Took her a minute to register and then she accepted the BOS that I got when I got the truck, which was $0.00. The guy had sold his property and didn't have a place to keep it so he gave it to me. 53 F100 short box stepside

I hope that they can just keep away from the old stuff. In North Carolina, after a vehicle reaches 35 years old, you don't have to get it inspected anymore:bananaman. It seems like the old stuff would come under even more scrutiny, but hey , I just want N.C. to keep going in the direction that they are going in, as far as the antique vehicles are concerned. Niether one of my Mavericks have to be inspected at all.:dancing:

we don't have inspections here in Arkansas at all. Most of the time when we did, it was a wink and a nod , check the horn and lights and you're out the door. $4.50. It was ore of a PITA for the stations as well as owners so I guess they just dropped it. but...now you can get stopped for a roadside safety inspection anytime.

It used to be like that here in N.C. Now, they won't even accept a bill of sale unless, it is more than the tax value. The state is going to make sure that they get their money. No more $100.oo bill of sales here.

TN just taxes what you gave for it when you tag it. Every year tags are the same no matter how old or new it is, just depends what county you're in. Here tags are $54 per year. Antique tags are about the same, but it's a one time fee when you get them. No annual renewal on those:thumbs2:.

Here our tags are $28.oo. They get us on the HUT, "highway use tax". That tax is 3% of the states tax value of the vehicle.

Ours used to be $26, our county just recently passed a "wheel tax" (a tax on each wheel, including a spare) under the guise of putting it towards a new school.

arund here you show the bill of sale and the tags go by that. when we sell something the bos usually has a lower price. I thought my mav for $900 and it says $500 on the bos I think. The truck I gave 2k and it says 500 too. lol
