I finally got a few pics of my neighbors newly purchased Maverick. I've got to tell you, this car simply blows my mind. It's a former New Jersey car that has been off the road since 1992. It has 34500 original miles on the stock 250 engine. Other than the Comet grill, hood and fenders, the car is completely unmolested. It's as solid as a freaking rock! No rust holes anywhere. The quarters have no rust in them at all. The floors look like brand new. The torque boxes are perfect. There is no bodyfiller anywhere on this car. It's got a few minor dents and dings, but that's it. Even the exhaust system is still original. The paint is original, even on the Comet parts which just happens to match the green paint on the rest of the body. The seats are a little worn as is the carpet. We don't know how well the car runs yet, but our neighbor is planning to pick up a battery tommorow. We are in the process of painting a Chevelle right now, but once that's done we are going to run a hose into a gas can full of fresh gas and try to start this baby up. Pretty darn good for a $600 car.
A rust free/bondo free car from NJ or PA is a rare find. The winter road salt usually has eaten them alive by now. A friend of ours who knows the guy who owned the Maverick was supposed to talk to the guy about selling us the car a few years ago, but nothing ever came of it. But that's OK. We'll still get to restore it and it does have a good home.
That's for sure. Green seems to be the most popular color interior of all the junkyard Mavericks and Comets I have seen.
The car is going to be going to our neighbor's grandson when he's old enough to drive. For now the grandson wants to keep it stock. That dosen't mean it will stay that way, but that's the plan as of now. We need to get it running so we know how good the engine is. If there are any major problems there it just might end up getting a 302 dropped in it.
