I have a 74 maverick with the 250 in it and a c4 3 speed auto. stock minus i deleted the egr by blocking the intake and exhaust holes and vacuum block, what kind of mileage should i be getting and what are some tricks to get better mileage, its my daily driver at the moment and im going to be driving about 320 miles a week for work and want to save all i can.

I've driven the same combo daily for a few years now, in a 2 and 4 door.

250 with the head milled (9.1 compression), carter rbs, and duals, I can get 19 mpg babying the pedal around town.

In my bone stock 250 car with a carter yf I'm getting 16-17mpg babying the gas. The tires are 2 sizes wider then stock though.

I say 17-18mpg to be normal

I really baby mine, so I can squeak 20 - 22 MPG! This is mostly highway at no more than 60 MPH. Mine's a 74, but somehow escaped all the pollution crap. I put a Duraspark II distributor, coil, and module in, but other than that it's factory stock. (y)
Your foot will pretty much determine your gas mileage! I forgot to mention I use premium fuel, which back in the day equates to what regular was! My car doesn't like the cheap alcohol crap! :16suspect

Same here I drove our 71 to St Louis recently and got 23 going up running around 60mph, coming home I ran 70mph and only got 20 out of it, I think a 5 speed would get quite a bit better.

Your axle ratio and tire size has a lot to do with your gas mileage. I'm not sure what axle ratio mine is, but it is a Florida car, bought new in Jacksonville, so I imagine a low three's or even two's. Tires are 215x70x15. :)
I forgot to mention to follow the instructions for band adjustment to the letter! " PaulS " has several posts on C4 trans adjustments! :)

If the C4 is unmodified then the band adjustment is torque the adjusting screws to 10 foot pounds and then back off the front 1.5 turns, and the rear band is backed off 3 turns.
I doubt that band adjustment is going to alter your mpg... unless they are a lot tighter than they should be.

the trans is shifting early and taking a long time to shift so it's not helping but i think my motor has alot of miles on it. thats probly whats causing my mpg issues. i really need to do a compression test to give me an idea of where the motor is at.

I got around 20 mpg on my 200ci auto c4. Tires are 195/70/14, stock gears. On streets average speed 40, highway 60.

From 1st to 2nd, trans takes a while to shift so I manually shift from "D" to "2" or "1" to "2". 3rd gear goes in smoothly so no complaints there. Anyone else manually shift the column? I believe by me doing this it helps with the overall mpg.
