A friend at work says he has a 1988 wrangler, if i will come and get it i can have it, and 4 spare rims with tires for $100. Woohoo. Cant wait to get it!
Ooohh that lets see an 88 wow you might be in for allot more then you want too be with it... Lets see 88 has the awesome 4.2L (if your lucky) but it is IM choked and uses that horrible carter electronic 2V carburetor...Some of the 4 bangers actually had a decent EFI comparatively. But the really scary part is the manual transmissions. From 88 to 90 jeep used a Peugeot transmission that tend to fall apart and cry just looking at the curb at the mall....The automatic... potentially an AW4 were actually stronger then the BA10 Peugeot manual transmission. Those Peugeot transmissions were soo bad they made the weak A$$ T5 transmissions that came in the CJ's look strong..(the WC T5 is a good transmission in a car like a mustang or a maverick but when you take the NWC T5 and then you add the torque of a decent running I6 and hang a 150 pound transfer case on the back end of it they don't last too long)
... its a jeep thing you wouldn`t understand. ...well I got you`r jeep thing and now it hurts when I pee! If it were mine I would keep the six and do some tweekin on it. V8 swaps in jeeps can get pretty pricey and involved and its a jeep its not like it needs to go fast. With that said I love riding wheelies coming up out of creak banks with my V8 powered jeep
Its all about what your using it for, like elliot said the V8 swap can get pretty pricey. The little dana 35C axles under the back of that thing werent known for their strength so even if you put a mild V8 in it that is probably overdoing it for them. If your going to use the jeep for rock crawling or something like that the I6's generally do better then the V8's do. Infact when you go down to moab in easter you see allot more I6's then you do V8's and the I4's arent that far behind the I6's. If your going too use it too go mudding I would be more inclined too go the V8 over the six, just for the horsepower... Of course we revert back to the axles being the weak point there. But if you are going to do allot of day to day driving in that thing I would stay as far away from a V8 as possible. Even a mild V8 in a 2900Lb vehicle with only a 93.4" wheelbase is scary. Heck the factory 177hp I6 is darn scary in the right weather conditions...And sad too say that I6 is probably the best engine crystler ever inherited thats why they used it in one form or another all the way up till the mid 2000's
good information. i think i will keep it as the 6 then. maybe rebuild? who knows once i get it home i can take a look and see whats wrong. so far i know - Missing a battery -With a battery in it, it wont stay running -Front master cylinder is empty, leak in brake system -driver floor board is gone, not sure about pass side -carpet is shot -top needs replacing. -might have electrical issues under the hood (lots of loose wires, :O) has 2 sets of rims and tires paint looks good, needs washing for sure.
