If the guy can fix it for $300, that's a deal, rebuilding it or not. I spent that on mine last year, just to have someone look at it, and make a few adjustments, and they still knew they have to pull it and do some work...for more money..

get a clear list of the fix from this guy. dealing with some of the shops around here they will not even pull and replace the tranny for that much.
shoot most junk yards wouldn't sell you one for that now. A friend of mine had one in the wrong shop and once removed they tried to double the price to 4500 he complained and found one on line for 1700 rebuilt. when he told them to return the car they tried to charge him 1000 just to give him his car back disassembled claiming min. fee.

Did you change the filter? It holds a high pressure valve in that will sometimes fall out when you drop filter, ( looks like a little rivet with a spring) if it fell out you will have very slushy shifting from 1st to second, if it shifts at all! You can also burn up the clutches if you drive it like that very far

if your uncle has dealt with this guy for some time and hasnt had any problems maybe the guy just isnt trying to get rich off of every customer that walks in the door like most shops. I know theres shops that only charge $25 an hour around here. and they look empty. you would think they would have cars lined around the block but nope. people think because they pay more theyre getting a professional. NOT ALWAYS THE CASE!
if my uncle dealt with the guy and my uncle is honest then I would go for it. if my uncle was crooked then I wouldnt believe anything he said.
now if you get the guy to write up a work order detailing whats EXACTLY wrong with it in some detail and how much to fix it and have a written gauranty then go for it. the b.o.a.r. will help you if it isnt right
