Or, he didn't know what he was doing, whipped the cam, bent a valve, and filled the engine full of metal....I always amazed at people that buy used pistons and cranks at swap meets...there is a reason their not using it...

My stroker kit came unbalanced. My engine builder waited until I gave him my flywheel. He resurfaced it and installed a new ring gear and bolted it up to the new stroker crank along with the harmonic balancer then balanced everything as 1 unit :)

how far is the seller from you? if hes close ask him to meet you at a local machine shop and tell him if everything checks out good youll pay any inspection fee and buy his parts if not hes got to pay the bill for any inspection. if the parts are good and he knows theyre good hell go for it because hell be confident that youll buy the parts plus pay the machine sop if need be.
the machine shop I work with has been around for as long as I can remember and didnt charge me anything to "check" my heads when I pulled a stud
heck he only charged me $100 to mag surface and fix a bent stud on my kids motor

if the guy wont meet you at a machine shop hes selling parts that are wasted and he knows it

But you derided Eagle cranks in general. To me that included billet cranks too. Mine's a cast unit, and it's got nine years use in it. It's likely got another nine years left in it too. And nothing other than having the whole assembly balanced was done to it.

He is 300 miles away, I tried to get him to come down on the parts price a little but he won't budge, it is just the rotating assembly, no block or anything else, it's $125.00 to balance an assembly here at the machine shop and $50.00 extra to add metal (weight) each time it's needed.

well then looks like he wants to keep the parts.
how much were you willing to pay?

300 miles away is a journey but maybe it would be worth the drive? you could do like I do and use that as an excuse to get out and make a day of it. take the family and stop off somewhere you havent been yet maybe a little mom and pop restaurant?

I drove around 4 hours one way to go check out a dump trailer for work and left empty handed because the guy wouldnt sell for $300 less than he was asking. I tell myself I shouldve bought it but my pride got in the way. now I cant find a dump trailer for under double what that one was priced at.
the point is it might be worth the drive

I thought the 500 large was just for the rotating assembly and didn't include the block..............................if it includes the block then it may be worth it................and maybe not.
    It's your $500.

Can you have him send pictures of the crank counter weights to see how many holes have been drilled already?
Personally, I'd would never buy anything over $100 without seeing and touching it in person...............................Did he ever say which kit it was, a GT or Street Fighter................????

What else should have done other than balance the whole assembly?

Hey, you're right, I guess I was maybe a little too general.....I should have said all Eagle/SCAT/Pro-Comp/Pro-Form and others are having their cast and forged cranks made in China............because China's manufacturing capabilities are somewhat antiquated and at this time are unable to machine billet cranks with any degree of success..................so, all of the billet cranks are all made in the USofA.
Yes, I do think the stuff that comes from China is less quality than stuff made here..................that's why my next crank will be a Bryant or Crower.

I would be a little leary of it because the unbalance situation could do damage to the assembly if he ran it very long, especially if it was run hard.

Considering that rods are usually all over the place when it comes to weights on the big and small ends and correct me if I am wrong, but balancing a rotating assembly is a must due to this and other factors, an unbalanced kit run for any amount of time is a kit worth selling for scrap, I would pass.

One thing I know about Scat/Eagle/Callies/etc is that while the raw forgings may come from overseas, the quality contol and finishing work(aero winging/polishing/etc) is American.
