I bought two 1971 Mavericks. Both are 2 door, 200 CI 6 cylinders, automatics. One has factory AC that works.....but the fan under the dash does not.....My question is roughly how many 71s like mine came out with AC and would I devalue the car if I took it out? I am not trying to restore it to original. Ripped the bench seat out and put bucket seats in and a mustang floor shifter....left the 200CI but put a big log head from a 77/78 Ford 250. along with a HEI distributor. Personal preference I would take the AC out, although part of me. likes the AC for comfort. I know a lot depends on whom ever I would sale the car to if/when I decided to sale it. Just wondering your thoughts.....and wonder if its rare to have AC for this year/model. Thanks Shane
Now days most would prefer the A/C in a street car, I know I'll eventually reinstall all the components on mine even though I despise the look in the engine compartment... On a 6cyl car that isn't a real performance piece, I say keep it...
If you are just building the car to sell it, then anything that is seen as a positive, will help the sale...and with a Maverick, you need all the help you can get.
You should never worry about "devaluing" a Maverick (especially a 6-cylinder). They were never collector cars, nor were they rare.
I don't know how hot it gets where you live, but here in swampy Florida I rarely drive my mav in the summer... I would keep the a/c... I'm going to add a under dash unit to mine so I can drive it more often...
I personally think working AC adds around a grand or more to the value of any car around here. I added factory AC to my non-AC car.
That is a good point. I suppose that in a hot climate, A/C would make a car (regardless of what it is) more desirable than if not so equipped.
Keep it. It will work as a heater/defroster without the refrigeration system hooked up under the hood, if that's what you have an issue with, but if you take it out and change your mind later, you'll have to add all of the under dash components back in.
I swapped in an AC heater box into my 70 so I could get rid of the blower motor sticking through the firewall and am only going to use it as a heater/defroster - should work just fine that way
